DAZ 4.12 file size issue

When I add a dforce hair like Classic Curls or Side-Layered Messy Hair to a basic G8F, the file size increases from around 400 kB to 108.000 kB. What happened?
Running on Windows 64-Bit Home and Nvidia GTX 1060 with latest drivers

I have a strange feeling the new 4.12 version has a bunch of bugs.
The simulation data has to be stored soemwhere, I think that accounts for it.
That feels like jumping to conclusions.
There are certainly one or two somewhere.
I have a few exceptionally large scenes which the prior version of Studio handled just fine. They load correctly in 4.12, but if I attempt to render them, I either get a very short render attempt followed by a completely blank window (best case), or (worse case) Studio throws a fatal exception, and my machine reboots as soon as I try to capture the exception log.
Also seeing a problem on rendering scenes with spotlights: One will work flawlessly, another (using spot render) will just render a transparent region.
I'm focused more on the first problem now; gradually reducing a large scene element by element to try to figure out if it's just an overall scene size issue or if there's a problematic asset that's throwing the renderer for a loop.
If I can come up with a repro for that, and/or the spotlight issue, I'll send 'em in.
