4.11 Not Rendering

I'm having an odd problem. Sometimes, when I try to render, the render window pops open, nothing appears, and the render finishes after about 10 seconds. It doesn't do it all the time, but most of the time. If there's a pattern to why, I haven't been able to figure it out yet. Any thoughts on what could possibly be going on?

  • I have this exact same issue with 4.12.

For me, it was magically the Nvidia graphics card that Daz didn't want to use. I put it on CPU, and it finally worked.

In the advanced tab under renders. See attachment.

Not exactly what I call fixed, because there's a problem that needs to be addressed still. But at least I know where to go next.

Thanks for the workaround tip - I'll try it and see if it works for me. It's strange, though, because my iray preview view is fine, and it DOES render correctly some of the time. I'm still trying to find a pattern to why it works sometimes and not others.

Agreed! Nvidia cards aren't exactly cheap - and having to wait a day and a half for my CPU to render something (and not being able to use my computer in the meantime) is NOT an option.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this/ have any suggestions on how to fix this?

When I migrated to 4.11, I too couldn't render anything.  Status bar would keep showing "Processing..." and nothing ever rendered in the Iray viewport nor a normal render.  Turns out my Nividia driver was very outdated.

I am currently have Nividia driver 431.60 driving older GTX 980 and GT730 GPU's with 4.12.  I know there is documentation with minimum Nividia driver requirements with each General Release (I recall seeing a link in the forums), but I was unable to locate the info for 4.11 nor 4.12 easily in the release notes for 4.11 or 4.12.

For  DS 4.11 Nvidia driver version 418.81. sticks in my head and I had to update to 431.60 when I updated to DS 4.12 to get Iray working.

I've had this problem since 4.11 was in Beta, currently on Nvidia driver 436 on my GTX 980M and it still happens. I thought an early 4.12 beta fixed it but it was just a couple random working renders - I'd closed the ticket I'd had open :-( I kept being told I was the only one with the problem... I downgraded my 4.11 to 4.10 - which doesn't have the issue. I'm not rushing to upgrade to 4.12 General Release yet.

  • @Lindsey, @3Ddreamer, and @Lucynsky/JoswanKodaigo - were you guys unable to render anything at all?

I've been playing around a bit, and a pattern is starting to emerge. If a set comes with a camera, and I try to use that camera - no render. If I use my own camera, I'm having better luck. So far, I've had issues with The Temple of Her (a Dec '18 Freebie that doesn't seem to be around anymore), Night Lounge, and Danaides Iray Addon. All three worked just fine in 4.10; I just upgraded to 4.11, but I also upgraded my drivers.

@3Ddreamer - have you been able to get any tech support with 4.10? One of the main reasons I finally upgraded was because tech support kept telling me to contact them again once I'd upgraded to 4.11.

Until I updated the Nvidia drivers when I updated to DS 4.11 I couldn't render in Iray. I ran into the same issue when I updated to DS 4.12.  The status bar would show "processing scene..."  (or something like that) for a very long time until I stopped the render and checked the forums.  There are many threads re: 4.11 and unable to render in Iray and the solution was to update one's Nvidia driver.  If your drivers are updated to 418.81 or higher with DS 4.11 and you still can't render in Iray, I don't have another suggestion for you.

I neglected to mention I DO NOT have CPU checked in the Iray Advanced Tab and relying on one or both of my GPU's for Iray rendering.

  • And here's where my technical ignorance is going to start to show - I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050. I have no idea what that means in relation to the specs you mention.

My iray viewport works just fine, though. My problem is that since updating to 4.11, many (but not all!) of my attempts to render in iray will run for less than two minutes and then finish - only nothing renders.

Do you know what version your Nvidia video driver is?  On Windows, right click anywhere on the Windows desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel.  Select Help>System Information.  The driver version the first item listed on the right box.

This is a known issue with 4.11 and some NVIDIA cards. Don't have the problem in 4.10 or in other modeling/rendering apps, so I'm inferring that something's borked in 4.11.

Switching on CPU in the Advanced tab helps; so does switching off the GPU, starting a render and aborting after 20-25 iterations, and switching back on the GPU. For the latter, I'm guessing switching off the GPU clears out the GPU memory cache, so the next GPU render doesn't just recycle the data from the previous run and cough up a hairball when it hits the earlier error.

Every post related to a technical issue should include the word "borked." That (and your hairball metaphor) made my day.

I tried @mclaugh's workaround, and it takes care of the issue, although it's a bit of a pain (*sigh*). Thank you all - it's good to be able to use Daz! =)

Does anyone know if 4.12 has this issue?

Just reread @Lucynsky/JoswanKodaigo's post. Do you still think it's the same issue? Does the CPU/GPU switch work for you?

Is anyone else having problems with rendering in 4.12?

Yeah, I've been having this same problem lately, seemingly ever since I switched over to 4.11 after using 4.10 for so long. Some will render out properly, while others will simply fail and output a blank or black image. This also seems to occasionally happen when I switch the Viewport to Iray, with the Iray never showing up and being stuck in the processing screen.

In the log file, this is what I get:

2019-10-04 08:24:48.404 WARNING: ..\..\..\..\..\src\pluginsource\DzIrayRender\dzneuraymgr.cpp(302): Iray ERROR - module:category(POST:RENDER):   1.0   POST   rend error: A CUDA error occurred: unknown error
2019-10-04 08:24:49.660 WARNING: ..\..\..\..\..\src\pluginsource\DzIrayRender\dzneuraymgr.cpp(302): Iray ERROR - module:category(POST:RENDER):   1.0   POST   rend error: Exception during postprocessing: unknown error
2019-10-04 08:24:49.660 WARNING: ..\..\..\..\..\src\pluginsource\DzIrayRender\dzneuraymgr.cpp(302): Iray ERROR - module:category(IRAY:RENDER):   1.0   IRAY   rend error: Internal error in postprocessing pipeline.

It makes doing batch renders a gamble, because a number of them will error out. Making me waste time to attempt to render them again.

Sorry @LaPetiteVerita I didn't get a notification. If I keep hitting render it will eventually render in 4.12.0.83 Beta, sometimes on GPU, often on CPU, but not first time as it does in the slower 4.10 - ultimately it is faster to use 4.10, than repeated failed renders in 4.12 Beta. I haven't upgraded to 4.12 GR or new 4.12 Beta. I haven't gone back to CS since I closed the ticket thinking the first 4.12 Beta had fixed it, Last thing I told them was I was downgrading to 4.10 GR and they didn't say 'don't'. But I am seeing more and more posts with the same problem for something I was told was only me.

@3Ddreamer "But I am seeing more and more posts with the same problem for something I was told was only me."

What you're not seeing is the number of people that are rendering in 4.11, 4.12 beta, and 4.12 release without problems. You also don't know how many people opened a ticket or just posted in the forums.

Well, no one ever knows what isn't being said - it'd be a pretty impressive trick if someone did! But I have noticed that these things are proportional - the more people who have problems, the more tickets that are submitted AND the more people post in the forum. So it's a pretty good way to get a sense of what's going on.

@Lindsey - I finally found my NVidia Card information. I have a GeForce GTX 1050, Driver Version 419.72. So I don't think the issue is the driver, unfortunately.

I had this happen on my 1070 laptop today but renders on my 10 core 1080i desktop memory issues obviously. Are we being forced into upgrading cards? If so may roll back.. Or set laptop to denoise..

    419.72 is an older driver.

The current drivers are 436.48 (Game Ready) and 431.86 (Studio), so it's highly likely that your driver is out-of-date (FWIW, in response to my trouble ticket, DAZ Support recommeded using the game-ready driver), although it appears that some users still have the problem even with the current drivers. YMMV. You can always roll back, so you might as well try updating.
