Can't Select Clothing (or other item) Item in Viewport

This has been a long-standing issue for me but I haven't gotten around to seeking a resolution to it until now.

I have several items in my collection where they cannot be right-clicked and selected in Viewport despite having a tick next to the cursor in the Scene tab:

Why does this occur and how it can it resolved so that the object can be selected in Viewport (with all content menu options appearing in Viewport after right-clicking) rather than having to highlight it in the Scene tab? Basically what i'm after is the first part of the screenshot for items where ordinarily, it displays the second part of the screenshot (just Select all) in Viewport.

  • What appears for right-click options also depends upon which tool has been selected.

I pick items in the viewport by left clicking on them. Hold down the Ctrl key to select more than one.

In the example above, I had the Universal Tool (Alt + Shift + U) selected:

which allowed me to select the one leg accessory via right-click context menu in Viewport, but not the other.

I've encountered this problem on multiple occasions not being able to select a wardrobe/hair item in Viewport regardless of the tool selected.

Got no idea why that's the case.

  • You have to be right-clicking on a "node" [on the item] to get options.

At the bottom of the scene tab is a very tiny arrow. if you click on it, a "tips" section comes up and that is what it is saying.

    right click on node.png

Solution provided thanks to ZarconDeeGrissom and Richard Haseltine

Scene Tab : Select an object's bone (Usually Hip at the root of the bones hierarchy)

Tool Settings Tab > Joint Editor Tool (Alt+Shift+J)

Tool Settings Tab > Change : Selection Group : "None" by any of the ones available.
