Are these "fireflies" or is this some kind of "noise?"

For the first time I am having an issue with "white speckles" I can't get rid off. I am pretty new at DAZ so any advice is welcome.

They only appear on one item in the render, the Combat Rifle from the new Zeddicus Pose set released today.

Now I am using IRAY and an HDRI sky for the only light source. Still using Studio 4.11 since I didn't upgrade yet.

I've reduced the Glossy Reflectivity of the Combat Rifle from the default 0.50 to 0.05 (one-tenth the original). This does not seem to make any difference.

I've tried rotating my character and adjusting the camera angle, and this seems to have SOME effect, but some speckles remain. However I'd like to have the lower camera angle looking at the character holding the rifle for "dramatic effect" if possible.

I've tried adjusting the Nominal Luminosity under the Firefly Filter from 0 to 1500 and then 3000, and it doesn't look like it is having any effect.

Am I misunderstanding what these "speckles" are? Is it "noise" and not "firelies?"

And if it is noise, is there anything I can do without degrading the rest of the render? 99% of the speckles appear on the Rifle, and there are just a FEW on the character's shirt in the shadowed area under the rifle (shadow cast by the rifle itself against the character's shirt).

Thank you for any ideas.

  • Are you using the perspective camera?

  • I am rendering from "Default Camera (2)." (Every time I load the scene DAZ puts in another default camera - I should delete most of them.)

I've tried changing the camera angle and the only adjustment that makes any difference is to go with a higher camera angle loooking down at character instead of up.

However that eliminates the speckles, but causes a large reflection along one edge of the rifle.

For contrast, the speckles do not seem to appear on any other weapon from a similar camera angle.

Here is the Machine Gun from "Mercenary Weapons" set:

  • I'm really new to Daz as well and I had those with my first render though I was using the perspective cam for that. When I created a camera and rendered from there those white spots disappeared. Maybe delete those default cameras and create a new one and see if that works.

  • Is your camera's head lamp on? That could be causing unwanted reflections.
