What am I missing with dForce Longdrape Hair?

Okay, I must be missing something or the designer assumes all of their customers are experts with this.  I've attached a pic of my screen with the text highlighted.

First, it must be easy, for an expert.

Second, where do I find the pre-drape preset shape options?

Third, what do I do after that?

Please, in layman terms.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • The predrape shapes are in the Longdrape Hair group, at the bottom of the group list in the Parameters pane i your screen shot. Just set the one you want and then run the simlation, from the Simulation Settings pane.

  • Okay....Sorry, I don't get it.  I was able to find a couple of controls that moved the front hair to the back, but I see nothing for the back hair.  And I don't know what you mean to run the simulation.

And to top it off, whenever I go to NVidia Iray mode the flyiing, yellow hair disappears.

Here's an image I have so far.

  • Are you not simulating the hair at all (draping it - you click the Simulate button in the Simualtion Settings pane)?

  • Okay, I think I see it now.  I was trying to find it on the opposite side of the screen under "Simulation".  I'll give it a try.  Thanks.

  • Ah, I got it.  Thanks, Richard.  I found a short video that led me to the Simulate button I was missing.  Interesting trick.

Now, the other problem.  My figure keeps losing her hair whenever I view in Iray.  The hair disappears, like I mentioned earler.  What's with that?

To view dForce hair in Iray preview you need to change the hair parameters and set “preview PR hair” to “on”

  • Okay, so when I finished simulating and go to Iray preview the hair disappears and my figure goes bald.  What am I missing here?

  • Leana, i had to reread your post to catch what you meant.  I tried it and the hair is still invisible.

Are you using the Iray viewport? Or one of the others (like Texture Shaded).

  • JonnyRay, I believe I am, unless I'm not following you right.  My cursor is pointing to the Iray preview button, the preview PR hair is turned on, and still no hair.  And when I render as a Iray still no hair.

What you have selected is the "hair cap". Basically that's the surface that hair grows on. Expand it and there should be a child object for the actual Longdrape hair. That's where you need to turn on the PR (Pre-Render) hairs.

  • Oops.

    Oops.

Easy to do. :) I've made that mistake before too.

  • Okay, still doesn't show up.  The hair does appear when rendered but not in Nvidea Iray preview.  I've included the two pics showing the difference.  What am I doing wrong?

Now you got me. It looks like you have done everything right from what I know. Hopefully someone else can chime in that can help more. I can experiment some myself once I get home since I have that product as well.

  • Thanks, I hope you have better luck.

I ran into the same issue with the DAZ housecat. I kept using the Iray viewport, but couldn't see any fur. After much tinkering and searching I decided to make a post about it, so I went to render out an image to use as an example, and when I hit the render button and actually opened up a render window - boom! Fur. Seems like it's just something with the follicle-based hair. I don't know if it's something a lot of people are experiencing, or if it's just a bug for some, or if it's how it's supposed to be.

Same proplem with a couple of these dforce hair products. Turn off filter by context, type "longdrape" into smart context search bar, look under materials and shaping.

Here's a response I made in another thread on exactly the same issue:

You have to change some Parameters of the dForce Hair for it to show up in the Viewport:

    • Parameters > Simulation > Preview PR Hair: On
    • Parameters > Line Tessellation > Viewport Line Tesselation Sides: 1, 2, or 3 (The higher this value, the slower the response in your viewport. Best to keep the Preview off until you actually need to preview the hair.)
    • With these two settings, you should be able to see a representation of the hair in the viewport, but if you don't, some tools can interfere. Select the Universal Tool and try again.
    • Oddly enough, the actual render is also impacted by having the "wrong" tool selected when you try to render. Select the Universal Tool and try rendering again.

(Just so you know, it stumped me, too!)

  • As much as I try, I cannot get the hair shorten 1, 2 or 3 options to work on either Gen 3 or Gen 8 after draping as instructed...There must be something I'm missing but I'm getting tired of trying...
    What is the secret..?

    Help..?

  • For the most part, Longdrape hair is working for me...but, why does the hair appear to be very thin on the top of the head..?

The hairline at the front seems to be too high also..

  • Ol' "baldy" with Longdrape hair...attached...

Anybody know what is happening here..?
