Arki's Wings - 3 questions

They were a glorious thing to see, and very tempting, but...

1)  Will they work in Daz 4.10, or is the listed 4.12 a hard-and-fast rule?

2)  Can they use the original textures? (I don't use iray, so this would save a bunch of time)

3)  Dforce usually crashes me... I assume that you have to use DForce?  Or can the wings be reasonably posed without?

Thank you, anybody and everybody!

I'm just thankful that I'll be able to pose the Strigoa wings without having them come apart if I try to pose anything beyond the 2nd bone. I don't even care about needing to buy them twice.

It would be nice if we could use the original textures, But I won't count on it. It looks like they've been redesigned as well as re-rigged. The Iray only is annoying, but there are converters, and occasionally something with an Iray material will render in 3DL without bringing everything to a crashing halt (although it's more common in the other direction).

  • I don't care about buying them twice, because they are gorgeous, which is why I bought the originals already and basically use them as static props - but if I still can't use them if I don't use Dforce, what's the point?

Textures matter least, because everything can be retextured - I was more curious/hopeful. :-)

  • I don't have them yet, hopefully someone can confirm this, but only the dragon wings mention dforce at all, and they are listed as having both a dforce and a "regular" version included, along with a variety of posing morphs, so it seems very likely you won't need dforce at all if you don't want to use it.

As AlmightyQuest said, I'm pretty sure the Dragon wings are the only ones that would entail dForce. The store page always lists the current version of the program, and 4.12 has only been out a week. But I doubt that any of them require 4.11, unless it's something in the materials.

ETA: Welp, the new additions to the wings are Iray only, but the wings themselves *do* take the original textures from the V4 set. AND they take the poses from the Megawings bundle from the same general era. Woo-hoo!

I haven't tried to add the wing covers from the original set to see if they can be used with them. I wouldn't be surprised if they can be, but I don't need them for what I'm building so I can't tell yet.

All in all, I am extremely pleased.

ETA 2: Well, curiouser and curiouser. I ran a converter on the Iray materials, re-applied the trans maps, everything looked well. And then I tired to do a spot render and the wings were invisible apart from a few smudges. No idea what was going n there.

Re-applied the Iray MATs. The 3dl spot render is dealing with them. No idea whether this will work in a real render, but it's at least something.

    Hi all!

I believe I can answer all these questions :)
    1)  Will they work in Daz 4.10, or is the listed 4.12 a hard-and-fast rule?
The wings should also work with 4.11 (they werre set up on this version), and will probably also work with lower DS versions.

    2)  Can they use the original textures? (I don't use iray, so this would save a bunch of time)
The textures included either are the original reworked textures (resolution was increased a bit) or variations of them. So, yes. You can absolutely use the original textures, although you won't need them.

    3)  Dforce usually crashes me... I assume that you have to use DForce?  Or can the wings be reasonably posed without?
The dragon wings only have dForce membranes as an addon. There are other membranes included which are traditionally rigged. So no worries :)

On a side note, I will probably make the old feather layers for the Strigoia wings available as a freebie, with textures, new Iray shaders and all. Just give me a few more days to set up a download.

First of all, thanks for the new wings.

I am looking forward to the freebie Strigoia wings, as well.

  • Arki, these wings are amazing. Any chance of an update to G8 for the Strigoia Accessories someday? The talons are what I'm looking for, but they warp terribly on Autofit. D;

Thank you Arki.  I loved these wings and drooled at them at RuntimeDNA but were only for Poser at the time.  I'm so glad they are for DAZ Studio and iRAY.  Can't wait for the freebie!  WOOF!

It's a pain in the butt to deal with it, but something like these can be scaled and parented. No distortion there. Of course you have to load one version for each leg, make the rest invisible, and pose everything separately, and then go in and fix poke through and whatever. But if you aren't doing animation with it, it's doable.

(As shown with the Hippogryff here) Huh. My attached images disappeared. I'll try reposting at least the hippogryff.

ETA: He looked like he was on stilts. Have redone.

    Arki

    You ROCK!!!

A couple of years ago I emailed you asking about the wings - I am so HAPPY that you decided to update them!!! !! ! ! ! ! ! !

I just tested the Strigoia wings in Daz Studio 4.10 and it works fine.

May I ask if you plan on updating the Malaik wings?

  • JOdelJOdel Posts: 6,288

Yeah, I'm another of the ones who emailed Arki about the Strigoa wings back in the day.

I've never had a problem with the Malaik wings, but an update wouldn't be unwelcome. The new transmaps for the Strigoa wings are really fine. Even when used with the old textures.

Malaik Wings! Thanks to the other thread, I threw Arki's Wings into the cart at the last moment yesterday, even though they put me over my budget. I own all the previous versions already, because "you can never have too many wings." Malaik Wings are my all-time-favourite feathered wings. When people say they prefer other wings to Malaik Wings, I don't believe them: I think they are either mendacious or incompetent. Here's an old render of them in action, with their beautiful selves!

Wow, I must say, I am a bit overwhelmed by all the responses in here! I had no idea my old stuff still is that popular!

As for the Malaik Wings: I don't really plan to update them. I'ld rather create a full new set of feathered wings, because I feel the Malaik aren't detailed enough for what I'ld like to see on such a set.

As for the Sttrigoia products: There might be a conversion in time, but I am not promising anything. Right now I have no clue what my next product will be.
But I also don't exactly know which conversion you'ld all like to see. Maybe you can give me some clues ;) Contact me per PM if you have any suggestions.

@xyer0: That's a truly impressive render! Very epic!

I spent quite a bit of time updating the Lilithai Strigoia to G8F and Iray.  Couldn't get the harpy legs to convert no matter what method I used, oh well.  I used one of the old Aves Irae textures for the wings, and played around with the Iray surfaces to get them to look good.

    Very cool render!
Yes, those legs need some serious redoing to be reborn either as autofitting item or geograft.
I might do that some day :)

    Hi @Tiger Lee Arts.
I know that render with the Malaik WIngs Great job done there!
As for stuff for the new Avija wings, there are some addons planned, but I have no idea when I will get around to work on those. Too much other stuff is going on right now. I hope I can sit down later this year and get a few of the ideas out of my head.

That sound like a great combination!
And good that the old armor works on the new wings. I haven't tested that yet, but I plan to do another wing armor in the future. One with a more organic look than the old Angeloi set.

  • Here are the avija wings with the old armor. i call this render "Rise Above The Strom"

    May be an anime-style image
