I've been looking at Tinkercad and am thinking of giving it a go to make things that can be used as OBJs in DS. But if I import from Tinkercad is it then possible to add textures to it in DS?
I gave up pretty quickly on 123D Design for that reason, many of those apps don't produce UV's and by the time you unwrap it in something else you are better off modelling it from scratch elsewhere.
Basically I'm looking for a quick and easy (and free!) way to design things like spaceships and buildings. I get the feeling I might be better off using primitives and props in DS directly.

If it has UV mapping

Just took a look at their site and it seems more like it should be called tinker toy CAD. Get a real modeler, get Blender.

Wings3D might suit you better

I myself use Carrara, not free but often cheap on sale ,
many use Hexagon which is free, many includes several PA's
likewise Blender but that has a more difficult User Interface
I'll have a look, thanks for the info.
