What about some different 3D lightnings/thunderbolts with morphs?

straight
circle
one start point - to end points (reverse Y)

and so on

I remember there was an old procedural product from a company called Zenstar, "Thør". It was a plugin for RayDream Studio and was very good.

Alas, it went away when they replaced RDS with Carrara. Unfortunately, Zenstar never updated it. The Thør plugin won't work in Carrara & my copy of RDS5 won't work on Windows XP & above.

I've not seen anything since come close to working as well as Thør did.

the problems with planes are, they are flat :) so 3D lightning figures with morphs would be a great product I think.

Mabye lightnings as circles with morphs so they can also be used as sci-fi cuffs for example
Maybe some typical lightnings with two or more morphable ends
Maybe some U lightnings with morphs for A to B horizontal use
Maybe just one straight lighnting with morphs (wave for example) for lightning guns :)

    morphs:

    zick-zack
    wave
    length
    spread for ends
    twist
    bend x/y/z for ends
    rotation x/y/z for ends
    different lenght for ends
    thickness

    just some suggestions

There is a free one over at RDNA that I use a lot.
It has lots of different shapes and is morphable as well.
    Sorry, can't link it :(

Well, the cheap and dirty approach would be plane primitives with transmaps. The Daz Cyclorama plants and some of the trees are done this way. They look OK from certain angles. The transmaps could be done in Photoshop, or whatever. For a "circlet" or bracelet shape, you could use a torus primitive. You might have to UV map it to make a transmap work properly. Don't overlook simple solutions based on primitive shapes.

Edit: There's a plane one on ShareCG:

Edit2: Have a look at this:

Can you at least give a name, then someone can go find it. Sounds interesting, if we know what we are looking for.

These are not lighting bolts but these are Prop Effects I was working on. 100% of the lighting in this render is from the effects as loaded. I believe the Idea you have is very doable.
