Hello, my name is Catie (I hope I'm posting this in the right spot).
I am totally new to graphic design. I'm a member on DeviantART.com and I really wanted to learn how many of those artist create their really cool graphic art, so I searched around for graphic art software and found DAZ to be really highly recommended for beginners and experts alike!

My question for you guys is how can I create my own people, clothes, backgrounds etc.? I want to create images that are completely my own, does anyone know if it's possible to do that using DAZ software? If so, what software would I need? Or is it even possible for a beginner to even do something like that without getting a degree in graphic design?

yes it is very possible to create your own items and all without a degree.

Try googling DAZ Studio tutorials for tutorials on shaders, on making clothing on just about everything to do with the program, there are video tutorials and written ones all over the web.

To make clothing you will need a modeler program but there are plenty of free ones out there like Wings 3D and blender. You can create textures too which you will need a program comparable to Photoshop.

I am sure others will hop in here with links to other resources. Welcome to the addiction :) Feel free to ask questions and for help when you need it

Welcome Catie, DS is mainly used for rendering and animations. To create clothing and objects, you will need a modeling program. There are many to choose from, some free, some very expensive, best thing is to try a few out and see what works for you and then learn to model. After you get the modeling part down you will need to learn rigging and all the particulars in getting your model ready for use in DS.

Ultimately you will need an image editing program su8ch as photoshop (expensive) or GIMP (free). This will allow you to make textures, make backgrounds, etc.
For someone new to this, there is ALOT to learn from using the various apps, to setting up a scene, to lighting, to understanding the different file formats, to how all things interact, to render settings and the various types of renderers, to the final output and postwork if you so desire.

Most here don't have a degree in graphic design, best to try the programs and see what works for you. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

If your ultimate goal is to create images, then you do not need to model. You just need DS and some content. There are some free and you can buy a lot at DAZ or other sites. What most people do to create their characters is buy some morph (or get some free) and use them to create what they want. They buy cloth/props/environment (or get some free contents) tweak materials then render. I'd advise to begin to use DS to get used to the software. There are some monthly themed challenge for beginners that you should try, as you'll get some advice. There is also the freebie challenge that you can attend to help you practice (see freepository). You can also have a look at DAZ tutorials on youtube and analyse DAZ ready to render scenes to learn how to create your scene

If you really aim to create contents then it's another matter and you'll have a lot to learn. You can have a look at Patience55's tutorials on cloth making with Hexagon to have a peek on how cloth creation goes http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/2174/ . David Brinnen did some Wing3D tutorials on creating some "special" objects http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/28092/ . There are a lot of thing to know when you want to create your own content and I wouldn't advise to begin with that as you seem to be fairly new to this world.

Consider DAZ Studio as a large photostudio, where you build your own scene: couple of props, a few characters/models.
You are the photographer, you do the light set-up and place the camera.
If you take a look here in the gallery, you get a good impression where DAZ is primarily intended for, and where it is good in.
While you are at the deviantart site, do a search in groups for DAZ and take a look in the galleries of one of those groups.

... or have a look in my gallery here, it is only one page and I don't have a certain style, so within five seconds you see what you could do with DAZ as well.

For "background" as opposed to people and clothing. You might consider Bryce there are a few tutorials here http://www.bryce-tutorials.info/bryce-tutorials.html

For making models Wings3D is free I have some tutorials for this on my channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/davidbrinnen look under Bryce rendering incorporating other software. You may also find some other topics there that are not covered on Bryce tutorials site.
