Ho to apply Bump Map to SPHERE in Carrara 8.5 Pro or DS?

Hi folks, I use Bryce much more than Carrara or DS, but have run into memory limitations using Bryce to import and apply very high resolution images from NASA around a sphere. Would Carrara 8.5 Pro or DS be the better choice for my next attempt? The attached image is 2048x2048, and shows the best detail I've been able to get with Bryce. I had to compromise by using the medium-res NASA images rather than the hi-res ones, which I believe are 16x higher resolution (64 pixels per degree). So, should I try it with Carrara or DS, and can anyone point me to a tutorial for that in either program? Many thanks! Hope you like the image!

Some are achieving very nice results in Carrara with the hires images.
In D/S 4.12 the bump and/or displacement image holders are found on the Surface Tab. Bump is illusionary, displacement will actually move the mesh but the results are only visible when rendered. While one can create a sphere in D/S, one can create and uvmap one in Hexagon [which is my preference]. You want a lot of mesh to hold the details.
Thanks very much! I had discounted Hexagon, but, will try that too. I appreciate the DS screenshot you supplied! Will try that as well, for rendering purposes. My ultimate goal, aside from a detailed rendering, would be to actually convert the end result into an OBJ that could be exported for 3D-printing on a Formlabs 3D (SLA) printer. Does that sound like a possibility using one of the Daz programs?
To achieve that, it would require actual displacement, rather than just bump. Could I do that with Hexagon? (I'm also considering Blender for that, if I can't do it in one of the Daz programs.) Again, many thanks for your advice!
Have you tried Blender 2.8?
The use of bump and/or displacement textures makes for illusions visible when rendered. Real mesh texturing would have to be made in a modeler.
You can certainly try in Hexagon, but seriously one cannot do alot of work along certain veins of activity with that program much as I love it. If about to spend years learning how to model you seriously might want to try Blender which is also free. As well there are a variety of other modelers such as 3D Coat, Zbrush, etc.
As Causam mentions, Blender 2.8 is the recent release and they have drastically improved the UI [user interface]. Many are the free tutorials available too on how to use Blender. Hexagon is old coding which while it's a great utility modeler to have in the toolbox, is not capable of keeping up with all the drastic advances that have been made in the 3D work including anything to do with 3D printing.
That being said, there is a free plugin FOR D/S to enable some procedure of sending one's model somewhere to be printed. Obviously all that is not a free service.
