I'm hoping to use Daz Studio to create some stills that will be used to illustration a novel. I can use the various human figures, but not sure how to add my alien. I have a design sketched out, but want to learn how to turn that 2D drawing into a 3D model. Full rigging isn't that important as I'm more interested in taking advantage of lighting, casting shadows, and perspective. So how would I turn my sketch into a 3D shape? Would I hire someone, or is a program like Blender or Sculptris the answer?
If your wanting a full figure you would need it to be rigged for posing. A low estimate would be $2000. You need to keep in mind that a PA makes a product to sell units to make there money. If you want full rights then you need to pay good high rates because the PA will never be able to sell it and make more money on it.
Check different sites and look at ready made things that you might be able to make work. I think there is something, an add-on to add fur to things here. You can check places that offer free characters and Blender models, but those models would need to be rerigged to pose them in in Daz Studio. The most economical solution would be find a rigged character that will work in Daz Studio, maybe see about giving it some fur and the colors you want and maybe some adjustments that won't break its rigging. Its not too hard to learn to change the colors of a texture in Gimp, and the hair/fur addon isn't that much. Sixus1 makes some creatures, there are others on Renderosity. Maybe check Runtime DNA too. ShareCG has all kinds of free stuff, no telling what is there and whether its rigged and rigged for Daz Studio. I'm new to this so I don't know all the places to look. Maybe someone here can supply the name of the product that can add hair/fur that is almost like dynamic hair? Look for a rigged model with the basic shape you need and understand that maybe colors and fur you can learn to fix yourself. Its worth it to keep looking for a bit. There is tutorial on making morphs, so you may be able to make some adjustments without the changes being big enough to break the rigging or warp the textures too much.
I see some things on Renderosity under stand alone figures that you may be able to use. Just go look at stand alone figures and keep in mind that you may be able to add fur, change the color, morph the features a little. These stand alone figures are affordable as well. An older model for Poser may indeed work in Daz Studio but you may need to play with the shaders a little if its too shiny or something.

You would need to be lot more specific before anyone can help you.
Do you mean a complete new character, including rigging and skin files?
Do you mean a morph of an existing character, Genesis, Genesis 2, or even V4?
I typed the word 'alien' into the search box in the store, and got the following link : http://www.daz3d.com/creatures/aliens
Do any of these look like what you need. A custom made figure could cost hundreds of dollars, are you prepared for that?
If you are going to use the alien in your Game, please take a look at the following thread.

That thread is not relevant to this issue. The OP is not asking about Games, he is asking about custom character designs.

Thanks.
The alien BTW is a non-human shape....squat blobby, furry, etc. So I can't simply morph a genesis figure into that shape. Or can I?
You can use this pack but it requires GEnesis 2 which is free in your product library. http://www.daz3d.com/aliens/wondrous-creatures-genesis-2-female. You can mix and match numerous different dials to come up with something specific to your needs

Thanks for the info. I'll explore some of these options.

Thanks, I'll check out Renderosity. That may be the answer.
