What is this thing??

This thing randomly has started showing up in my scenes, I have no idea what it is or how to get rid of it

    The chances are very good you have a Group of items in your scene. That "thing" is just representing the origin for the group. (These exist for several things, a group being the most likely explanation.) You could have created the group yourself, or loaded a set that uses groups. When you render the scene, this "thing", (I have no idea what it's called, either,) will not be rendered. It will show up in the Viewport, however, even when Nvidia Iray draw mode.

    Could it be named GIZMO?

    check if you have either a group or null. Several objects hierarchically attached to it will move/resize/rotate/hide at same time... very usefull.

    But, yes, those 'gizmo-things' are a bit annoying
