I found a YouTube video for Blender on how to make a Gyroid cube titled "Gyroid Minimal Surface (Blender)". For those of you who are experienced Carrara modelers would it be possible tp replicate all the steps in this video using Carrara's modeling tools?

The "toki FX" YouTube channel has a lot of interesting geometric models that would be fun to model in Carrara if that is possible. I am a rusty mid-range user of Carrara's modeling tools.

There are a number of different modeling methods that can be used to make the first initial "minimal surface" form. Here he uses bezier curves.

    Possible to model a gyroid in Carrara?  yes.

    Use exact same steps?  no, not exactly, but can use similar steps

     

    If you want to try, I suggest one of the following two methods.

    (1) use the polylines and surface tools to create the initial folded plane shape.  Duplicate wth symmetry and weld to expand.

    (2) look up the mathematical formula for a gyroid. Translate into 3D coordinate formulas (generally functions of Pi, but I don't know gyroids off hand).  Use Carrara's formula modeler and avoid 90% of the steps in the Blender video.

    Thanks for your help and suggestions. I have saved your "Formula Example" post and will read it carefully. I hope I can undestand it. If I am succesful with modeling the gryroid cube in Carrara I will post a render of it.

  • I like most of "Make Games" Blender video "how to" series, and so I requested help for creating a bone marrow model for use in a nanobot animation idea. This is what was posted today. The Gyroid lattice was dumped in favor of this method. I would rather do this kind of thing in Carrara, and eventually animate a scene in Carrara than do it in Blender.
