Grey blocks instead of a human model

[Grey blocks instead of a human model] That's the whole issue, actually. At some point I deleted the 'smart content' (UPD sorry, it was 'daz connect') folder from my OneDrive cause I thought that DAZ didn't need a folder which isn't even located on my PC - and maybe this is what caused the problem. I recreated the very same folder in my OneDrive and reinstalled those Genesis 3 Female Starter Essentials but it didn't work. How can this be fixed?

Have you checked your DISPLAY settings? It looks to me like you have it set to Solid Bounding Box.

It's right next to the Camera name in the display port. Just click on that cube icon and change it something like Texture Shaded.

As for your Smart Content being on OneDrive, I think others can help you more than I can. Good luck.

  • The sphere icon shows that the Viewport is in Texture Shaded mode.

Are you getting an error message on loading? What did you delete - Smart Content is a pane in DS, not a folder, so it can't have been that. How did you install the content the first time, and then how did you reinstall?

No error message, just a block model spawning casually as if it was normal. I deleted some online part of my library which was located on my OneDrive. Sorry, it wasn't "Smart Content", it was "My Daz Connect Library". So I recreated the folder but the problem remained. When I ask DAZ to "browse to file location" of my G3F model, it does browse to that *.duf or whatever file, b u t it still doesn't work. I did both the primary installation and the reinstallation using DIM, yeah.

My guess is that you deleted the Data folder of My Daz Connect Library which deletes the actual geometry of the figure; reinstall the figure locally so that there is an intact data folder.

Hmmmm. This is an interesting problem. Some simple questions:

    1. Are you getting this result with other figures? What about legacy figures like Genesis or M4/V4?
    2. Have you tried changing display modes? What do you see in cartoon, wireframe or hidden line?
    3. Have you tried rendering the scene to see what you get? If it renders okay in Iray or 3DL, then it could be a problem wih the display engine and not the figures.
  • DS will use the Connect isntalaltion, if it thinks it is still there, over the DIM instalaltion. Right-click on the product icon (Genesis 8 Starter Essentials) in the products tab and select Uninstall, then DS should use the DIM version (or you coudl reinstall within DS).

Yes, this was the issue! I brought back the People folder in my OneDrive but forgot about the necessity of Data and Runtime folders. Thank you so much, actually.

But the new question is, well, how do I get rid of such necessity to use Daz Connect?

I'm not sure I quite understand... Daz Connect is part of Daz Studio and not a discrete piece you can delete... you can simpky not use it and reinstall your stuff via DIM or rather painfully manually and then empty the cloud portion of the Data folder.  What are you trying to accomplish?

  • If you see the grey blocks it means the .dsf file is not in the main DAZ Studio "data" folder. That data folder must have all the .dsf files of the product to show the entire product.

I install all my DAZ products with the DIM onto a Windows PC. I didn't change its default settings. Finding many DAZ products became the 'grey blocks",  I have a killed computer from not realizing many of my DAZ files were on One Drive, which I didn't know, and others were on hard drive in different libraries!!! I deleted the same way, the "extra files" on One Drive, as I had no idea all my files were being sucked into that void. I hate the One Cloud, it hijacked thousands of files, but the Studio couldn't find them. Although I deleted a lot of products on Cloud and computer, somehow my memory was eaten up and apparently there are files stored somewhere, but I cannot find the duplicates. It seems entirely unnecessary to me to have a One Drive AND the DAZ Connect which is its own cloud. This is because when the One Drive downloads, you don't get all the files in the right places. Documents folder and Libraries are completely screwed up. I can't seem to rebuild them, so I can't even use my 3rd party stuff,  because the Documents files were duplicated first up to the Cloud, and then downloaded in different Libraries. What a mess! The Libraries become very difficult to search in.

So first step, decide whether the One Cloud is really useful for DAZ studio. My advice, don't use it. 2nd step, check your product's 'data' file. It might have several internal folders, which really gum up the One Drive Cloud downloading. 3rd, I go down the product data file to the lowest folder with the Vendor name, and drag that to the DAZ 'data' folder. I get rid of the extra upper folders to make a cleaner path.

The grey blocks also happen when 3rd party products were not set up with their 'data' information placed into the DAZ studio 'data' folder. Those are the dsf files.  So following step 3 above, I have good success with just installing that, and drag/dropping from the harddrive file to Studio. I wish DAZ would make a Stickie Forum Post "How to Fix Grey Block Figures", since I'm not an admin.
