Making skydomes and HDRIs more diffuse

Hi all
My problem is that when using Skydomes and HDRIs in Iray the shadows on a figure seem far too harsh in contrast to each other. The "lit" side will be very bright, but the side of the figure that's in shadow is very dark. I thought using the Atmocam2 might make a difference by making the light a little more diffuse (and I think it does a little) but is there another way I'm missing?
Alternatively I know there are ghost lights but I'd like to avoid those if I can.
Thanks!

HDRI with some clouds or overcast clouds provide significantly more balanced light leading to better images.
