AniMate techniques or keyframing to avoid off mesh or collision?

Still trying to figure out a b etter workflow for Animate. Tried moving my Genesis 8 variant character arm in two keyframes but can't seem to get the frames in between to look right.

So far I am using the pose + render. Have not been able to figure out a way to preview. The problem with previewing is that these frames in between aren't shown (and it's super slow), somehow can't even get textured view (non iRay) in preview to show anything but black

Not sure what you find wrong with the in-betweens. If anything, the movement on the video is too slow and you'd want to move the keyframes closer together.  The best way to test things is to render as a movie in a smaller size and in basic open gl.  Don't render in Iray or something that takes a long time to render.  You can judge the movements in basic, then once set you can then render some stills in Iray to gauge the lighting, then render the whole shot in Iray (I render as PNG sequences, in layers, then comp the layers in AE.)
