Learning Blender for Daz Studio

Hi! I'm not sure if this is the correct thread, or if I should've put this somewhere else. I wanted to share my Blender progress. I'm building a longhouse and scene for a Dungeons & Dragons game I'm in. Can anyone suggest good tutorials for exporting from Blender to Daz, and then making it a Daz Studio figure or object, please?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Good luck with this project! I have a few things I want to create for Daz Studio, and Blender would be a great way. I'll be following your progress with interest.

I am particularly interested in including morphs, so I can have a prop that can change dimensions after it's in Daz Studio.
Sickleyield's DeviantArt tutorials have helped me quite a few times, and she does Blender as well. Maybe there's something in there?

  • Thanks, Trelligan. I'll give her channel a look. If you start Blender, I suggest Grant Abbit's tutorials. He also has a Discord channel that's proving very, very helpful. I still have a whole lot to learn, but managed to get the roof and supports on and textured. You can tell the roof textures aren't quite right. Like I said, I have a TON to learn yet.

  • Looks like you will have a nice model there.

Actually don't think I have seen a free tutorial that comprehensively covers creating/preparing items in Blender for Daz Studio.  There is at least one in the shop - SKU 46803 - but it is going to be a bit out of date for current versions of Blender and DS, though principles will still apply.

Transfer is really down to exporting/importing as an OBJ file, so any tutorial covering that will help (unless you have cracked that already).

If you want to rig bits of your model, e.g. doors, I recall there is a Youtube tutorial by Sickleyield on rigging a door in DS.  A few years old but still helpful.

    Things to remember:

    • Create materials and assign them appropriately in Blender, so you get corresponding Surfaces created in DS as part of the OBJ import.  No need to do more than a basic material, because the OBJ format won't transfer the details.
    • Create vertex groups in Blender for any parts you want to rig, so you get corresponding Face Groups in DS and you can make use of these when rigging in the Figure Setup pane.  To my knowledge, there is no way to transfer rigging from Blender to DS.
    • If you are creating morphs (you could use them to e.g. open doors if you prefer that to rigging them), then make use of shapekeys in Blender, so you don't lose your original shape.
  • Thanks, Andya!

Hi Tim, glad to see another D&D player.

Out of curiosity, why are you trying to get Blender models into Daz instead of Daz models into Blender?

  • @TheMysteryIsThePoint: In my case, I want to take one model from Blender to Daz so it can play there with all the other models I have.

@andya_b341b7c5f5: Okay, now I'm embarassed. I have that video, but never watched it. Went to the page and was surprised to find it already purchased. Just need to download/find...
