How do I catalog something so it shows up in "Smart Content"...also...

How do I back up that work so that if I have to reload I don't lose all my hard fought cataloging?

Conversely...

Can someone teach me to fish and show me where the documentation is to do this?

    There's a tutorial that is often referenced: Metadata tutorial - Adding new items to your smart content. It's for an older version, but the principles are the same.

    Current documentation: Adding Metadata to Products

    You can save all that hard work by Exporting User Data from Content DB Maintenance. It will create one or more UserData_n.dsx files in the Runtime/Support folder. I would copy those to a different drive, and to the cloud, too.

    Not for nothing but is there any way to import/export from MS Excel?   

    I love to use spreadsheets. This seems like a great use case.

    Well, it's XML, so maybe you can script something to extract the relevant info, but it only includes the data you add or change, it does not include the metadata that came with the product. It does not reference the GUID, the product name or SKU, just the filename and fields you add. Better to play with it in an XML viewer/editor.

    Product metadata can be exported via right-click on the product. User data can also be exprted for specific product(s) via right-click.

    Good to know, I would have just right clicked categorized.
