Where is the helpful communities for Maya?

I tried the official Maya forums, but the best I got there was one person that gave me a five year old link.. several versions of Maya have been out since. along with (I'm sure) better ways of doing what I'm trying. I asked the question here and it was completely ignored.. I can't seem to get any help in regards to maya on the 3 diff forums that I'm already on.

Have you tried the Autodesk section over at cgsociety.org?

Most here don't have access to Maya due to cost which is probably why you are getting no responses.

And if are visiting various Maya forums seeking to discuss Daz/Genesis Understand that most Maya Professionals are likely creating their own content.

Please link your question.  I'd be interested to see it.  I'd love a 3rd Party Interop forum here so we can help each other.

Funny, I just checked the OPs profile to see their other posts in hopes of seeing the maya question that maybe I could help, but found no maya question that was ignored. Was it the rigging question?

Naw, that's the sad thing, I was actually asking about maya related stuff in regards to content creation.. Chances are, most the people that use it are either filthy rich, or going to college to learn it professionally. Either way, they likely don't care much to help other people..

You think I actually PAY for Maya..? Lol... I'm not freakin rich.. What they charge for that program is more criminal than any amount of piracy.. I honestly don't get it.. If they sold that program for 200$, or even 500$, they'd probably make more than enough sales to offset their profit margin. They may even make more money doing it that way.. I mean, for what they charge, their total customer base must number in the 100's...if that..

There is now a $300 USD per year "indie" version of Maya for individuals and small companies....... The industry professionals,in Film and television, that are the target demographic of the Autodesk products, can afford the monthly fees. ... and need the 24 hour live tech support that comes with it. .............A quick google search for the "maya curve deformer" yeilded 10 videos for me.... sometimes we have to take instruction where we find it.

Well, some people got money, others have a five hour a week job, live in a tiny town where it's near impossible to find work, and welfare which barely covers rent. I'm working on improving my modelling skills so that I can eventually make some money through content creation and then refine my skills further to eventually make enough off of this that I could actually afford to pay for Maya. Also, I wasn't aware that Maya was as 'cheap' as it is. I mean, even 300$ per year for software that you never fully own is still BS to a large degree... But I could have sworn I seen it priced somewhere as high as 10-30k a year..

Autodesk has a very liberal Free Educational license policy. Their software "phones home" at least once per session IIRC so it is very difficult to "pirate "

A person here reported that he told Autodesk he was "self educating" via YT tutorials and they granted him a free educational license. They want every aspiring 3D/CG artist using their Products.... No reason to resort to Illegal means.

That's interesting, I will have to look into that.

@lazarus102 That's what I did. I just said that I was trying to teach myself 3D animation and I got both Maya and Motionbuilder for 3 years, no questions asked. I think they appreciate that sometimes hobbyists, who would never pay for their products anyway, sometimes evolve into paying customers, sort of like the way Apollo used to give away powerful workstations to universities knowing that kids graduate and go on to be decisionmakers.

Careful with Maya Indie, however... the first thing they instruct you to do is to disable auto-renew because they have reserved the right to not offer the indie price next year and it would renew at the normal price. I, and probably everyone, agrees with you about subscriptions, but it was nice that I just got an upgrade to 2020 without ever having even asked for it.

But, and I can't remember where I heard it, but someone gave some prescient advice: Don't learn the skills of your industry as it is today, learn the skills of however far into the future it'll take you to acquire those skills. I know you've poo-pooed Blender in another thread, but you might consider whether your argument against learning it will remain valid three years from now, given Blender's momentum in mindshare and capability. I got into Linux around 2000, before it was everywhere, and it has made my career. Blender seems to be following the exact same trajectory that Linux did, and for the same reasons.

    good luck with your learning.

I've tried using blender, and it's not terrible now, but in all honesty, I much prefer the way maya handles extruding, and that is a tool that I use one of the most. Also, maya's shortcuts for moving around in the interface, are unmatched. I find it addictive.. When I try to use some other program and go to hold alt to move around with the mouse, then find I gotta move the mouse all the way to some designated icon every time, I just get frustrated..

  • Working on getting that free educational license now. Just sent them an email. Hopefully that works out, cuz they got a whackload of content on their site for learning stuff (if u got a licence).

If I remember correctly, you don't have to even interact with anyone... I think there is an educational section on the website. You just enter a sentence about why you think you qualify, and then choose all the software you want. It was quick and easy.
