Do you have the shoes (not the human figure) selected in the scene before you try to change the colour?

It's as @MelanieL sauggested.  Once you load the shoes onto the figure you will need to sel;ect them before applying the textures. Go to the scene tab and select each shoe in turn and apply the required texture (iit may work with both selected, but somr products have a separate left and right texture).
