I think I got the bugger
my scans show nothing, no popups etc
    so hope it is ok

    ...excellent,

Sounded like some kind of Adware with popups occurring.

This has me nervous for after April 8th I'm going to have to be more vigilant about security since that is when XP support ends. Can't afford Win7 as well as having to update MS Office (my Office 2K won't run on 7). That's about a 300$ outlay total.

And I'll have to deal with that terrible restructuring of the Office apps UIs.

Not able to afford (or really care) to update my MS Office to Office 2010
Not able to afford a UPS for the Workstation.

No need to upgrade to Office 2010. I reinstalled Office 2007 and it's working fine on my Windows 7 Pro machine, and on the new Windows 8 laptop. In fact, I was having issues with my reminders...it said an object was missing...but there was a Windows update an hour or two ago, and there were security updates for Office 2007, and for some reason, after I started up Outlook again, all my reminders popped up! :-) Of course, I had to go pay two bills because I was a day late on both of them. 8-/

...I have Office2K which isn't supported by Win7. I'd need Win7Pro (139$ for the OEM) to get XP mode to continue using O-2K it and then that will make my system vulnerable to the same security issues I'd face if I just stuck with XP.

Does Office 2K actually fail in Windows 7 Or is it just not supported? In any event, if you run XP in a virtual environment you don't need to grant it access to the net, nor do you need to let it run when you aren't using Office. Of course there's also Libre Office or Open Office, depending on the complexity of your files.

Can't you just use Open Office though? It can read (And I think write...) Office/Word files and is free. The project's been replaced by something else now though, but I can't recall what it is. I'm still using OpenOffice though. Every bit as good as Office in my opinion.

Outlook I've replaced with Thunderbird - which is a nice replacement unless you hate (And/or can't use for whatever reason) Mozila products like FireFox.

@Danta: I've some art, but no 3D stuff. Could post some later I suppose.
I've always been a bit anti-social IRL. Online I can be quite social when I want to be, but in real life? When faced with real people? Not so much ;P

Good question. I always wondered why Office 2000 isn't compatible with Windows 7. I know the setup programs form Version 6 of Microsoft Visual Studio fail to run unless I edit a configuration script or run the setup in Windows 9x.

...yeah I fall into the "bookish - not socially attuned category".

When I was in grade school, on the noon hour recess after lunch, I'd go to the local library that was a couple blocks away rather than the playground.

Give me a workstation and projects to work on and I'm totally fine. Put me at the front desk dealing with people all day or in a management position and I'm an emotional wreck by the end of the day.

The issue with the open source versions is possible conflicts with the file format, and formatting is important in a resume.

Word/Excel 2010 create files in .docx and .xlsx format. They can still read and convert the old MS .doc/.xls ones but as to document formats created in other software, I'm not too sure about them. Also A lot of times employers specifically ask for an "MSWord" document or PDF (I only have a PDF reader as I can't afford the full Adobe Acrobat) when posting a resume and cover letter.

    I know what you mean.

An old, open source program crashed when I tried to open a .docx file. It could save a .docx, but it couldn't open it. The new version can open the .docx, but the document lost its formatting when the older program either saved it or the newer program opened it. Online websites accept .docx and .doc formats, but not OpenOffice .odt.

My Word will save as... a PDF file. I don't need converters anymore. And it's old. I'm sure the Libre Office has the same feature. And the newest versions probably have compatibility with current MS formats. It wouldn't hurt to check it out, it's free! It would only take up a little of your time.

I don't even know what that means. I mean, I understand about standards and standards organizations. I just don't know that standard. I haven't read the specs or any articles about it that break it down. All I know is that Libre Office supports both reading and writing MS Office format files, which was the question, and I hope I've answered it sufficiently. No insult meant to you. :-)

ECMA is the European Computer Manufacturer’s Association.

    Read about the standard here:
