Difference between "fit to" and "apply to"

I know that "fit to" is to conform clothing or hair to a figure. I can't use "fit to" to something like conforming skin to genitalia. It only works via "apply to". But just still confused that no answer in user manual. In general I can't tell the difference between the two.

"Fit to" is for conforming one mesh to another; "Apply to" is for taking a preset (which has no mesh of its own) to set parameters or surface settings to a mesh.

Thanks fixmypcmike. And the default load (by dblClick an item) is "fit to", right?

No, but if an item was saved to be fitted it will fit to the selected figure on loading (and in recent items will also parent to the figure). Conforming figures are fitted, props are parented, settings (such as materials or shapes) are applied to - the difference between apply and fit/parent/just plain load is that the former modifies a selected item while the latter load a new item.
