Syntax error

I have 3 DAZ purchased products (listed below) that are generating errors.  I've been working with technical support, but so far, the issue is unresolved.  The three products giving errors are:

Woodland Dweller for Genesis 8 Female(s)
dForce Butterfly Outfit for Genesis 8 Female(s)
and
Urbane Poses for Genesis 8 Male(s)

The symptoms are...

  • Whether I access the products via Smart Content or Content Library, and whether they are installed via Installation Manager, from withing DAZ Studio's Install tab, or manually copying the files from unzipping the file downloaded from daz3d.com, the indivual files don't dispay the thumb nails,
  • and when double-clicked, they don't install and give an error directing me to the error log.
  • Within the error log the error gives the file name and reads, "Syntax error - expected '{' or '['"".

Things I've attempted to resolve this are...

  • within DAZ Studio I right-clicked the product in Smart Content and told it to uninstall and updated the meta data afterwards so it shows with the grayed out icon and the little (v) circle in the upper right, and then re-installed.
  • within Install Manager I went to the installed products and uninstalled, and then went to the install tab and installed them again
  • manually I've gone to the actual folders and deleted them, and then reinstalled the files manually from the product .zip files
  • I deleted all three (in the above order), and then attempted to re-install from the Smart Content tab
  • I deleted all three (in the above order), and then attempted to re-install from Install Manager
  • Finally, I delted all three and manually reinstalled.

I'm not sure what else to try.  My own experience with script writing is there's a missing brace or bracket in one of the files which says to me the downloaded files from DAZ are either truncated or contain the error.

I own thousands of DAZ products as well as many from Renderosity and other sources, and these are the only three giving me grief right now.  I did have a similar problem with a product from another vender a few months ago, and the vendor fixed the file, I re-installed it after their fix, and the problem was gone.  So, I'd be curious to know if others who own the above products have issues too, and if they did, how they resolved them.

I'm open to suggestions here..

  • Have you tried with the Connect (in DS) version uninstalled and the DIM version installed?

    Hi Richard,

You asked, "Have you tried with the Connect (in DS) version uninstalled and the DIM version installed?"

I hadn't, but with your suggested I did.  :)  Thanks for the suggestion.  Here's what happens now...

After uninstalling in Smart Content (and making sure the folders were deleted), I then went in to DIM and uninstalled and re-installed, and here's the results...

    • Went to the Content Library tab and loaded the Woodland outfit okay.
    • ... loaded the Butterfly outfit okay
    • ... attempted to load a pose on G8M from the Urbane Pose set and got a "file not found" error.
    • Browsed to the folder location, and all the files appear to be there.
    • Reinstalled the Urbane poses manually, overwritting the existing files...
    • ... still get "Would you like to save changes to the current scene before closing it?" when with G8M selected and double-clicking the pose, and
    • ... if I click "No" I get a "could not open file" error (it shows the correct path to the file, but
    • ... when I drag the pose over the figure, and tell it to apply the figure to G8M it works, double clicking gives file not found.

I'm not exactly sure what that all points to as being the root cause, but at least it is a work-around in the meantime.

I know someone that has those poses, and I'd have heard all about it from him if there had been any issue with them, as I'd be the one doing any fixing if there had been.

What most don't realise is that most DS content is a bunch of .zip files inside a .zip, and that it doesn't take much during download to corrupt a compressed .DUF or .DSF, one byte out of place and DS will cough up error messages, add into the mix the number of people who have been complaining about DIM issues lately and you start to wonder if that's what happened to you.

Something to try is to go into your product library and manually download one of the products, uninstall the "broken" versions and do a manual install of the file you just downloaded.

Very likely not realted at all but, a while ago had the exact same issue with some of MEC4D's HDRIs.  The problem was resolved , not sure how though, sorry!  An interim solution that did seem to help out was to delete the default camera from the empty scene before loading the HDRI.

So the poses are definitely not installed through Connect - it has the downward triangle in a circle icon at top-right of the product thumbnail in Smart Content?

That is correct.  In Smart Content, they show the circle with the downward triangle.  If I go to Content Library, they are in there and they do work when applying them in Content Library.

Again, that's a work-around, but I'd still like to find out whey they don't work when installed as Smart Content.

That's interesting.  I'm starting to discover the interaction of various products can cause some real problems if you get the wrong combination.

That is very odd - usually this kind of thing happens because the system is trying to use the (absent) Connect-installed files. All I can think, clutching at straws, is that there is some left over data. If you completely uninstall (DIM as well) the product can you still open it as a product in Smart Content>Products, or does the thumbnail go grey?

I tried uninstalling DIM and reinstalling, and it had no impact.  I might try unisntalling/reinstalling DAZ Studio, but if that does resolve the problem, it would mean we still don't know what causes the problem.

  • Unnstalling and reinstalling the applications would be unlikely to do anything.

I'm of the same thinking.  I've had a ticket opened with DAZ for over a week with no response yet.  I think their support department is busy with holiday sales issues.

It had to be resolved at DAZ's end, and then I had to delete and reinstall the products.  As it turns out, there was nothing I could have done to resolve it.

Thank you for your suggestions and help Richard.
