Disabling shadows on the ground plane

Can anyone explain what settings to modify to keep the default ground plane from showing shadows? I don't mind the plane being there for setting up the scene but I'm really tired of what should be a non-existant object insisting on showing shadows.

 

For that matter, how do I set the thing not to show up in renders in any way, it's not an object I can select

Render Settings>Environment

Click  the button under "Draw Ground" so it says "Off"

you can also adjust "Ground Shadow Intensity" to 0 if you would like to have it, but not have shadows.

I general have it set to off unless I'm just test rendering something and want a ground under it.
