Light Sources Not Working.

Scenes I buy off the Daz 3D site never look as vibrant and lit up as the store pictures for me. I'm relatively new and I'm trying to figure out how to get "studio lighting" levels in these scenes just like the store pictures. They're always dark, and characters in them are shadowed, and sometimes not how I want- faces are shadowed or the wrong angles, etc. And even after I place them how I want in a scene. The people or characters are the whole point of doing them. The scenes are background, naturally. Placing distant lights, sometimes several spotlights, etc. does nothing. The program still puts the light source IT wants, not what I want. The characters are never any more lit up with what I start with. Or still not in the way I intend. I do try to go into the light tab, to make sure spotlights point at characters by name, even widening the angles, turning up intensity and lumens. But the program in rendering still acts as if the lights aren't there. (I need "Daz3D for Dummies" info here. lol!) What could be going wrong. Any ideas? Thanks. :-)

Also, IRAY seems to work hard on my PC's CPU, instead of using my Radeon 580 series GPU that I bought for gaming. (My next PC I plan to go back to nVidia) I've been looking in the settings but can't figure out how to get it to NOT use my processor. Is there another process for rendering that's as good as IRAY but that's not gonna kill my i7? Please let me know. Thanks again.

    The lumen values are set for 3Delight renders, so you could try rendering with 3Delight. It works better for low light scenes anyway.
    As for Iray, try increasing the Film ISO in the render settings. Lumen values, if you are going to do it that way, need to be up around 50000. Just do a google search on it. There are many threads about it here, and google does a better job of finding them.

    As far as the lighting goes... since you say you are fairly new, are you turning off the camera's built in posing headlamps befopre rendering?  If you don't do that, then the headlamp will usually overwhelm every other light source in a scene and fill in everything with a birght, even and almost shadowless light like a ringlight.  Note that you CAN'T turn off the headlamp if you're using the default perspective camera... that's sup[posed to be used for setup, not rendering, so the headlamp is always on by default.  here's a quick tutorial Sickleyield wrote https://www.deviantart.com/3d-school/journal/Daz-and-Iray-Tips-and-Tricks-entry-level-595204916 ;

    As far as the Radeon card goes... sorry, it doesn't work with Iray.  At all.  Iray was specifically designed to work with NVIDIA, on your computer's CPU, or with the two working in tandem, When I pulled out my own Radeon card a year and a half ago and replaced it with an NVIDIA, the difference was night and day.

    Thanks for the input so far. I have a few questions:

    How would I find 3Delight to try that method instead of Iray to see how the difference is there? I look under my Render Settings but all I can find is Iray stuff. No mention of 3Delight. Would I need to reinstall Daz? Or do you have to buy it?

    How do I switch from Iray to 3Delight?

    The link from DeviantArt is gone, turns up a 404, so I can't see how to turn off that master light.

    I know some of the 3D modeling I've worked with in other sources worked better with nVidia, so at some point I do want to get rid of my Radeon card.

    3DL comes with DAZ Studio.  Lights made for Iray won't work with it, though, so you have to create others, use ones included with 3DL products or buy them.

    YOu change render engines in the Render settings tab https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/196001/turning-off-iray

    Strange.  It was up an hour ago.  But here's the official DAZ video video on the subject.  https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/196001/turning-off-iray

    I'm sure that there are applications that work better with the AMD cards... though I can't think of any off the top of my head.  Personally, I've got mine sitting in an anti-static pouch inside a box as a backup, just in case something happens to my 1070.

    Why does this editor do dumb [stuff], i swear you load an asset some clown doesn't make it properly and it removes something from scene, i added one prop to a massive scene and all my light sources have now vanished, the whole scene is dark, the sun doesn't work the lights that are set up no longer work, i have everything in scene set to visual, was all working prior to loading in a new model then now no light source works like the model has turned off some damn setting i can't find simply to turn back on, Stop being [unhelpful individuals] when making content. make sure it works and doesn't [mess] my whole scene so i have to spend then next [...] 2 hours trying to find out what switch has been flicked off!

    I change the light sources in scene it effects normal texture shade, when i switch too Iray the whole screen is now going dark, what option is it to toggle all my light sources back on, nothing is hidden, i have a sun and other light sources that should be showing in scene i had done nothing to the scene that would remove any light source all i did was load a new prop.. My light source still say they are there i even see the markers on map where the direction of the light is set yet everything is now black with no light whatsoever.

  • If you are using a pre/non-Iray item and lighting the scene with external lights (Distant Lights, HDRs) then any kind of modelled sky dome or other enclosing prop will block the light - Iray doesn't support turning shadow-casting off in photoreal mode. Also check that the Environment is in a mode that includes Scene in Render Settings.
