There was a gray skin preset for Genesis and I guess it still exist. I don't know if you can encounter problems but you could try to convert that skin preset to Duf and corret whatever you want in the preset, save it then apply it to M6.

setting myself up for a weekend of torture, pleasure/pain  trying the shader settings one at a time :)

when i click on M6's 'skin' in the surfaces tab, it highlights a bunch of mat zones, but not his lips :?

is there a quick way to select all his mat groups using his limbs jpb only,
torso, a quick way to select everything using the head.jpg?

i've found that when i highlight something in the scene tab, when i go to the surfaces tab, it doesn't follow what's selected in the scene tab, i have to select again.

If I understand well your answer:

    Magenta is Template 1
    Blue is Template 2
    Red is Template 3

Template 4 and 5 for mouth and eye parts

edit: templates 1, 2, 3 coincides with textures

    t3.jpg
    489 x 803 - 63K
    t2.jpg
    502 x 772 - 67K

With the Surface Selection tool active, right-click and you can select all surfaces using the same map.

I read this thread and I did not see the answer to the topic question. I to would like a handy cheat sheet. Does anyone know where to get one so I can reference it as I learn.

Try the Guide or the Manual...
