Issue with Character In My Viewport

joe_karrjoe_karr Posts: 10

So..i don't usually go onto the forums too much and normally i can figure an issue out on my own but i'm kinda not sure what to do with this issue as i can't fnd much on it (or perhaps i'm missing it?)..Either way i'm not sure exactly what's wrong with my genesis 8 figures and otherwise they had been working just fine but now any genesis 8 figure i try to use loads this way in the viewport area and also the eyelashes don't show as anything but solid colors instead of eyelashes as well (some models either show with no eyelashes or others don't show at all the base figure here i don't think seems to show any eyelashes or little). When i render them they show..well decently except for the eyelash issue depending on the genesis 8 model or character i use. My biggest problem to me isn't just the aforementioned but it is also the fact that i can't see how anything looks in the viewport until there is even a render that is completed. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? What am i missing?

You appear to be rendering in 3Delight's cartoon mode with Iray mats. The mat files are read differently by the 2 rendering engines [engines being my term].

Solid lashes indicate missing transparency file [white lashes on black background]. Again each type of mat file has a different place to put that.

The white eyes indicate something over the eyes needs to be put much closer to or at 0 opacity.

If you load the default G8 figure, select the eyelashes, save out a mat file for it. That would be an Iray mat. Then when you load just the eyelashes to one of the characters missing its eyelashes, you can apply the mat to those lashes. If you are indeed trying to render in 3Delight [or more specifically not in Iray], then if you hold down the Ctrl key and apply a basic 3Delight shader to it [select ignore for the images] you can [after making any necessary adjustments] save out a mat file for 3Delight.

You're quite welcome. I get frustrated with the eyes at times too. Went from white eyes to black eyes! Got them straightened now too.

Also, made a couple of presets which may save somebody some time. For the eyelashes of G8M [may or not work on G8F's, didn't check] Update, yes they do except of course with the male eyelashes ;-) retired.

Down a few subfolders under Materials one can find mats for the eyelashes. The eyelashes must first be loaded to the correct figure. Apparently we now have 2 ways to save mat files. Normal ones we're used to and now something called hierarchical mat file. Thankfully can copy/paste said mats to the anatomy folder [content folder view] for quick finding next time 'round.

ROFL, your viewport has gotten switched to Cartoon Shaded mode, see the small circle above his head, click on it and select Texture Shaded instead.

    Now now ;-)

The lashes still needed transparencies, etc.

As I just finished explaining in another thread, every G8 character preset not only loads the figure, but also loads the eyelashes, conforms them and applies the Iray eyelash preset for that character.

So they should already have them, only way I know to not have them is to make a total arse out of creating the character preset, and/or to not make the eyelash preset a Hierarchical preset.

Missed that other thread. The OP mentioned of other characters that they were having this issue with. I've been noticing an all around growing trend of poorly made characters and/or morphs "out there" which are messing up the base figures. So we all end up learning a lot more about how things work than ever we wanted to spend time doing. Any way, for the G8M, the eyelashes alone load with no maps applied and no mat files present. So now there is one, actually 2. G8F's load with the mat applied already. Cheers!

edit: dug around through some more folders and okay, found an Iray mat that will not load on the lashes. Seems to be one of those Hierarchical presets you mention. Good golly, what more loops could possibly be made, so much for loose eyelashes in a make-up kit eh. hehehe ... oh dear.

I edited my other post above these somewhere. ty Bejaymac.

TBH I think it's part poor content creation, part lack of knowledge, and part that lot (points at Utah) keep changing the game plan without telling the majority.

When they did G8 they changed how the character preset save function works, it's no longer a case of selecting materials and shapes, now you really need to expand that window to see the changes (points at image).

Putting a "tick" against the three options is all most users will need to do so long as the eyelashes are loaded onto the figure before trying to save a character preset. The button with the >> on it opens the second window (that also needs to be expanded), this is where you set up the eyelashes and tell DS which MAT preset to apply to them at load, and that preset needs to be a Hierarchical material preset or DS just wont apply it.

Got four freebie character presets here, one doesn't have the eyelash settings in it so no eyelash is loaded, two have the settings but have them in the wrong place and poorly formatted (bad copy+paste probably) and also don't load the eyelashes, fourth loads the eyelashes correctly but the Mat preset isn't Hierarchical so it doesn't get applied.

Hierarchical presets have been around a while, before G8 at least, problem is most just don't use them (or understand them) and that includes vendors, which is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, but I get in enough trouble around here without slagging off the vendors as well.

Well I'm certainly happy to learn of this before I start releasing a bunch of characters!

I've noticed another gotcha with hierarchical presets. I sometimes assemble characters bit by bit, loading separate eyelashes, eyebrows, etc. then sort out the materials. Sometimes my assembly glitches, and the extra bits are properly loaded and fitted-to, but not parented. When this happens, any H.preset I save won't pick up the presence of the non-parented bits. The same happens if the preset is OK but the G8 figure isn't. I've got into the habit of always checking the Scene tab, to make sure the bits that should be parented actually are.

Thanks again Catherine3678ab ! Lol and yeah the lashes were an issue too and i did notice that too Bejaymac when talking with Catherine lol. Unfortunately what threw me off was the fact it loaded in that mode whenever i started up daz so my mind was just wondering what happened lol o__o; ...so i didn't think to check that for whatever reasons and yeah...i had too fix the lash transparencies etc too and all lol that other information  Catherine and SpottedKitty mentioned is...interesting i'll try to keep those notes for later tucked away..Even so sadly since figuring out my other issues i ended up with others, i had to completely backup my daz content manually onto another drive...entirely uninstall any and all versions of daz that might be on my C drive, due to a SQL error - i searched around but nothing i found/tried out seemed to work for me so far...i even installed the newest version of daz studio onto an entirely different drive and i'm still getting the same error at startup..." A valid PostgreSQL CMS connection could not be established. Several DAZ Studio features that require a valid PostgreSQL CMS connection, such as context aware content views and loading content installed using the Daz Connect service, will not be available. Check your network, anti-virus, and firewall settings for conflicts. " Also yes i find humor in the fact that it still automatically goes into cartoon shade mode still at startup there..As for any network, anti-virus or firewall issues i've already looked into that and everything seems to be allowing the program access so...nothing is blocking it from what i can tell as far as that goes..willing to try anything to fix the issues though i actually had this issue for a little longer than i did with the cartoon shader loading, the lashes issue etc. i had just finally gotten fed up with it lol.

In your Product Library, filter by "Postgre" and you will find PostgreSQL CMS. You can manually download and run that. It should then fix itself.

Not certain on this, but I think having the program and necessary things like the Postgre need to be installed on the main computer. It is the Content/My Library stuff that can be store on other drives [making sure of course to tell D/S where to find 'em].

  • Ah alright many thanks again Catherine ! i'll give that a go especially since i had tried other things before now that hadn't worked after searching around the forums where people were suggesting things like changing port numbers and other strange suggestions that hadn't worked for me i'll certainly try what you suggested asap since your suggestion makes a lot of sense to me more than other things i've tried lol.
