Problems with outoftouch hair products

Unfortunately this vendor seems not to be available via direct message, so I'll try it in the forums.
I own quite a lot of hair from outoftouch and I'm usually superhappy with the quality. But recently I noticed strange black spots/strains on figures (fore)heads which came with OoT hair and went away once I removed the hair. It looks quite strange and does not appear with other hair products. Any ideas anybody. I may post some samples if necessary.
Thanks!

If you have smoothing turned on try turning it off. Having the hair selected, under "Actor" & "Adjusting" try increasing forehead depth by 1% at a time until the black marks go away, if there's no forehead adjustment morph you can try the headsize morph instead.
If you switch your view to Lit Wireframe or Textured Wireframe you can see in the viewport where the issue lies. I've had the same problem. What's happening is the mesh of the scalp on the hair is intersecting the mesh of the figure. As NekoSore mentioned, there's morphs included to help fix that, thankfully. Switching your view will let you see where the problem lies, and let you see when you've applied enough of the morph to get rid of it.
I haven't bought any OOT hair since strand based ones appeared; previously, they were usually my go-to hairs, and never noticed an issue. Would love to see what they do with strand based hair.
I would add to NekoSore's comment, if there isn't a smooth modifier on the scalp try adding one. Scale up the scalp if possible, to see if that makes it go away.
Changing the Instancing Optimization to Speed in the Render Settings fixes that issue.
I kept thinking the solution was to make the hair smaller, but I actually found expanding the hair a couple notches can help.
I suspect the answer is down to not having the two geometries (figure and hair) actually intersesting/occupying same location in 3D space), so shrinking or expanding the hair will reslve that.
Thanks for all the replies. Played with "forehead depth" which helped but changing instancing optimization as Rafmer suggested was the easiest fix. Tried it with two different hair products and it worked both times. Regular setting was "auto". Anybody know whether I shall stick with "Speed" all the time? Regarding the suggestion with smoothing, was normal smoothing in the hair settings ment. Did not try out that one though.
Thanks again!
Looks like I need to learn strand based hair too. What are the benefit of strand based hair compared to non strand based hair?
As long as your scene fits your graphic card memory cap I see no reason to not use Speed in Instancing Optimization.
I tried to contact Outoftouch by PM but no response. Not sure if we are all talking about the same problem but none of the suggested workarounds helps with my renders. Here's a render with the dark/blocky shadows behind the fringe. Totally spoils the effect on what is otherwise a good hair product.
Hi, maybe this is not problem with OOT hair. We've had the same issue especially with bangs, the problem seems to be in Iray itself when rendering transmaped materials. Try adjust Render Settings/Optimization/Max Path Length from -1 to max (64).
Thanks! That seems to fix the problem I had with Matilda Hair; but it seems to me that is a different issue than the OP adressed.
-1 is infinite bounces. A max Path Length setting of 9 or 10 will be sufficient for almost al renders and will add some sppeed to the process.I hadn;t thought about Instancing Optimization, but then my default has always been speed and I only see this issue very rarely.
@marble
I don't see your issue.
Those areas are the funky areas you mean? The shadow looks weird there to me too.
Yes, those shadows. Once I noticed them I just can't have them like that but I don't know how to soften the shadows. I've tried different and custom opacity cutout masks but they stubbornly remain.
Thank you so much!! It worked really fine!!
