How to change length of Strand-Based Hair (SBH)? (solved)

Hi Folks,

In Daz3D 4.12 I have been experimenting with strand-based hair and cannot seem to control the length of the generated hairs despite there seeming to be a setting (i.e., "Length") for doing exactly that in the Distribute tab of the SBH editor.

Attached are two experiments with a sphere primitive: one used Length = 0.1 and the other Length = 15 on the Distribute tab.

After making those Length changes on the Distribute tab, I did see the hair length change in the preview window, but subsequent SBH tabs for changing the clumping, random length, scraggle, etc. showed the visible hairs at a "default" length in each case.  In fact, every hair experiment I've tried with SBH resulted in a seemingly default length for the generated hairs - even editing those settings after the fact makes no difference to the visible length.

Thoughts welcome on how to vary actual length of the generated strand hairs.

EDIT:

I just noticed the "Reduce Length" setting in the Tweak tab and that does reduce the size of the hairs, which is a start!

And. under the Style tab, it seems that "Scale Curves" and "Extend Curves" can lengthen hairs.

So, what is the use of the "Length" value in the Distribute tab, to get an approximate bearing on hair distribution at your desired length setting?

We don't have any documentation on the Strand Based Hair Editor, so everything is trial and error.

The "Length" on the Distribute tab is in the Preview section of the interface. I believe it only affects the preview of the guidelines, just like the "Amount" only affects the percentage of hairs that are shown in the preview, not the number of hairs that are eventually generated.

The Scale Curves and Extend Curves will extend the length of the actual generated hair, as you have found. The Comb can also change the length, if you uncheck the box for Retain Curve Lengths.

Thank you, that was very helpful!
