Cliff Face Shaders - Not working? Anyone else have this issue or am I dim?

For the life of me I can't figure out how to apply these.

I started a brand new scene and put a plane primative on it, selected the surface, applied any of the shaders (none work.) . 

 

What am I doing wrong?

    Surface will only show in renders. 3DL only, no Iray.

    TIL: 3DL shaders don't show up at all with Iray. I thought they were just not as pretty as Iray.
