Rendering restarting over and over

Hi there
I've encountered this problem multiple times now and would like to understand why this happens and if there's a way to prevent this.
So I have this scene rendering and it's rendered like 109 iterations. Then suddenly it starts over and begins again with iteration 1. When I cancel now it really looks like it just started rendering. It really is completely starting over the complete rendering.
Sometimes this happens multiple times in the same rendering process, just like in this last render where the screenshots come from.
I noticed it's more likely to happen when I'm opening or using another software like chrome browser while rendering.
Is this only because of my crappy hardware (GTX 770) and I'm due for an upgrade, or why does this happen and can I prevent it, besides not touching my PC at all while rendering?!^^
Thx, I appreciate your answers :)
cheers

It looks like something is taking VRAM away from the render and causing it to drop to CPU and then the VRAM frees up and the render shifts back to GPU.
What are you doing during renders? with a card with so little VRAM, 2 Gb, almost anything, opening a window or switching tabs in a browser, could be causing this. If you're not doing anything you need to find what you have running in the background that might be trying to display something.
Yeah as I mentioned and suspected it mostly happens when I browse the internet using chrome. Guess I just need to upgrade my hardware then...?! :) :(
Still a weird thing to happen... I get that it renders slower and takes longer...but starting all over again... :(
You have a very small amount of VRAM that you get anything at all to render on the 770 is pretty impressive. When a render is running you are going to just let it run and go do something else. Or get a Nvidia based graphics card with more VRAM.
