Problem with Iray HDRI Space

Hello, I have problems to use Iray HDRI Space by Kindred Arts. Is there a documentation how to use it? I tried all of the rendersettings, but I have problems to find the planets. For example the earth setting is only a black background for me.

I attached some test renders, so maybe you can help me.

It's the alien planet blue, moon 16k, sun and the last is the eart setting

Thank you!

You need to rotate the HDRI dome (Dome rotation parameter in Iray environment settings) to get the features into view of your camera. The tricky part is that the hdri is not visible in the texture shaded preview so you are rotating blind and these particular hdri are largely black. You can either use the Iray preview or this tool: https://www.daz3d.com/ibl-master-for-daz-studio

I use that one all the time it provides a sphere that shows the hdri and also a shows the hdri in the background on a dome. That way it is easy to precisely align the hdri background image.  Very handy. It also does lots of other things. It is one of my most used tools.

Thank you for the tip with the tool! But shouldn't it load right, without moving the dome?

Well, I think the problem is "what is the right way to set as default?".  HDRIs are used for lighting as well and in some cases the best lighting setup might not be with the planet or whatever dead center in the viewport. It also depends on the camera focal length, render aspect, etc. For example on the Earth HDRI in that set, the sun is right next to the earth. With the Earth in front of the camera you are looking at a backlight situation, so the default setup has the planet off to the side to give light that shines from the front/side in default orientation. Setting dome rotation to 270 degree puts the planet in the center of the default view.

It is loading right. With HDRI you have to either point your camera to the area you want to see on the HDRI, or rotate the HDRI to where you want it to be viewed. HDRI is like a giant spere wrapped around the scene, it's not a given the people actually want to see the planet or moon in the camera view. Other people might want it to be somewhere behind the camera, to cast a reflection on a visor for example.

  • hm, okay. thank you. I'm glad I found the earth now ;-)
