CMS Connection & How Do I Get It?

I'll attach the message that pops up when I open DAZ Studio. Maybe this is why by database of content seems invisible and why my metadata is nowhere to be found and no smart content?

...I get that once in a while as well. As I don't use Connect or Smart Content it is just an annoying pop-up.
Yes, it does handle the metadata. Did you install it on your new machine? CMS, that is.
Is this Valentina? I find i get that on my mac after a crash; have you never been able to see your smart content? I would check in DIM if the CMS is howing as downladed first (see attached). Next check in Daz Studio's Content Manager to see if everything is properly configured (see attached). For all this to work, you have to have a working PostGreSQL CMS (the database manager), a proper content folder with a Data folder, runtime tec... and finally, there should be a Daz 3d folder in your Shared User account on your Mac that contains the Install Manager> Manifest Files and the files that tells Smart Content what is smart content... make sure that that isn't empty.
What is CMS? Where do you get it, or from where to you download it, and where do you install it?
PostgreSql CMs is in DIM... it should self configure when you install. You must tell DIM where to install to and you must tell Daz Studio where the installations are.
You needn't tell did where to install it, it will configure that for you using the defaults which shouldn't be changed unless you have a special reason like make all DAZ stuff on a D: drive or something like that. You'll be disappointed to find some DAZ stuff still winds up on the C: drive regardless though.
When I set up my new computer, I decided I wanted everything possible for Daz Studio to be on my external drive. I have all of 400 MB (aside from the program itself) of any Daz data on my computer. Everything is set up to download onto my external drive which is great for me and doesn't eat up my internal HD.
The solution that works for me with the error shown by the OP is to open my preferences and in CMS Settings, tick the port number up (or down) by one and restart Studio. That has worked for me.
I think I have a ton of the SQL stuff installed, both on my computer, and on the external hard drive where I keep the content. I'll attach screenshots. I have a feeling I need to check a box in the Content Directory Manager?
You don't have a CMS Cluster Directory defined in Studio. Open DIM Settings on the Installation tab and look for Content Database Base and Content Database Port. In Studio, open Preferences->CMS Settings and paste in the settings from DIM.
Yep, Daz Studio knows where things are by the mapping of content folders and runtimes on your hard disk. Smart Content uses the mapping of the location, the metadata of the product, and manifest files to decide "ah, this is Victoria 8 hair!" for example. There are a million tutorials but here is a start... skip down to the content manager portion: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/artzone/pub/software/dazcontentconfiguration
On the screenshot on the left is the Preferenes Panel of DAZ Studio, on the right is the Installation Panel of DIM. Neither program will allow me to change the sttings for Cluster Directory, Port, or Content Database Base. And as you can see, they don't match. So, the Install Manager won't work properly. Now what am I suppose to do?
I think DIM and CMS are working properly, but Studio can't see the database because the settings don't match, as you say. The DIM settings look greyed out, I don't think you can change them if CMS is running, but I would keep those and change the ones in Studio. You can start/stop CMS in DIM at the top next to the settings button (looks like a layer cake), and in Studio from the Content Library context menu.
When I click on that wedding cake icon, I get this message about wanting to connect to the Content Management Service. I click "yes", but nothing happens. There doesn't appear to be anything in that wedding cake icon that that allows me to do anything.
Are there any postgres processes running? Do any start up after starting DIM or Studio? Either one should start the database engine at the same time.
Did you actually install the PostgreSQL CMS (Mac 64-bit) onto your computer with DIM? Just having it downloaded is not enough. Close DIM and Studio and start them up again after installing PostgreSQL CMS. It should configure itself, and be ready to run the next time you start DIM or Studio. Then check the cluster and port settings for both.
DIM has PostgreSQL CMS (Mac 64-bit) listed as being something that is already installed. So I clicked the Uninstaller. Then I reinstalled it. It fixed half the problems. Now, when I use the search funcction in the Content Library panel of Studio, the installed product now shows up. I reimported all the metadata, and now the search in Smart Content works and the products show up.
But there is still the problem with DIM itself. It still says there are 2111 products to Download, and 1869 products Ready to Install. As you can see from the screenshot, Spiderqueen Hair is listed as Ready to Install, but when I do a search for it, it shows up as already installed.
Thank you, btw, for all the help you're giving me!
Progress...
DIM only knows what has been downloaded by scanning the Package Archive for the .zips and/or the accompanying .dsx files. Ensure that path is properly set in the DIM Settings -> Downloads -> Package Archive. If you have not transferred those files from the old machine, DIM won't know you already got them.
As for what is installed, that is from another set of files in the Manifest Archive. DIM creates them as products are installed, and that's where it looks when determining the product's status when refreshing the list. Ensure that path is also properly set (Settings -> Manifest Archive) and copy those files (also .dsx extension) into the designated folder on the new machine. If you used the same installation path for the library, that should be it. Restart DIM again, and see what happens.
Oh oh! I looked at the Ready to Dowload list again, and I realized that some of them are Product Updates, and - yikes! It looks like I bought 2000 products during the year I didn't have a computer to run DAZ Studio. So those are actually brand new, and I have to download them for the first time. Take my credit card away from me!
I'll look over the Ready to Install list again and see if I can figure something out.
I also just found out that my new Macbook Pro, that doesn't have a NVIDIA card, can actually preview the scene in IRAY mode - almost instantly too.
Well, you've got some quality time ahead. Good luck...
THANK YOU IT WORKS
I'm having this same issue. Studio crashed, and now I can't get CMS to start. I've tried the blue button at the bottom of the Smart Contant Pane, I've tried from the drop down menu, and I've tried whatCris Palomino said up above - none of it works. Any ideas what to do now?
If DS crashed it is, unfortunately, possible that the database is corrupt. Do you back the database up (it is in the AppData folder on Windows, which shold be caught by most back up tools)? Have you been exporting UserData?
I think I figured out the problem. I had some duplicate folders in Content Library due to installing some products from Renderosity incorrectly, so while deleting those I accidently deleted the Content Cluster folder. I ended up reinstalling Studio, and now everything works.
Ouch, yes - the ContentCluster is the database. Try to back it up at least occasionally, making sure that no applications thata ccess the database are open when you do so, as a hedge against future issues.
