Why look Michael so different in IRAY vs. 3Delight vs. Editor

Hi,

I am totally new to DAZ3D Studio. I used Poser before but since Win10 my PoserPro 2014 does not work anymore. So I want to give Studio a try.

Since I have a really old ATI graphics card I tried to render in 3Delight first and found that Michael7 looks totally weired.  His skin looks much darker and very plastic like than in editor or in IRAY. See attached pictures. IRAY take ages on my old machine, 3Delight is fast but looks bad. Is there some settings wrong? I did a fresh installation of Studio 4.12 and did not alter any settings yet. Just loadet M7 and selected the M7 skin material. I also added an old Poser asset (the wooden bar) to see if it looks different, too.

Thanks for advice.

Thorsten

Did you apply the 3DL version of the materials to your figure? Iray materials often won't look good rendered in 3DL.

  • Yes. But I don't see any difference at all. But if I enter a light to the scene it looks much better. It seems the default lighting of 3DL is much to dark. But with one light in the scene the 3DL rendering becomes as slow as IRAY. It seems Studio is MUCH more ressource hungry than old PoserPro 2014.

So I am a bit stuck. My computer is to old for DAZ and for a new Computer I have to use Win10. And Win10 I am just testing and found about five not cheap programs I own, which are not working. The first time in the history of Windows that I have to spend hundreds of Euros for software updates or keep Win7 forever. :-(

The default light is just a distant light shining through the camera so you can see something in your scene when you don't have any other lights. So yes, it's far from optimal.

Not sure what kind of light you used, but it's totally possible to have decent lighting in 3DL without renders slowing to a crawl.

  • I have problems with the viewport lights even after much experimenting. My problem is, that the rendering is much brighter as the viewport, even if I do not use the default light, but a three light setting. If I alter render setting it also affects the viewport (what I like), but so I cannot get a near render viewport. Also the viewport looks very grimy, like there is some sand on the figure.

Is there some kind of brightness or quality adjustment for the viewport.

The viewport is designed for assembling scenes, positioning items and posing. Since the viewport does not use either Iray or 3Delight (the two native DAZ Studio renderers), but represents an OpenGL view of your scene. Spending too much time trying to make everything look perfect in the viewport is counterproductive, since the final render will look different regardless of which render engine you choose. If you wish to use Iray, there is the option of opening an Iray viewport, but it will tend to make the viewport less responsive (which is the reason why the main viewport works the way that it does for scene setup - its quick). For 3Delight, you can use the spot render tool in the viewport which will allow you to select portions of what you see in the viewport and it will render that section to get an idea of what it will look like in the final render. The spot render tool is one that I personally use a lot and find indispensable.

  • I really understand that the viewport can never look exactly as the final render. But it should be LIKE the final render. How should I setup lighting and materials if I cannot see what it will look like. And a quick render for checking is not possible, iRay with one naked figure with hair and three lights needs 25 minutes for a viewport sized image.

As I said, I before used Poser Pro 2012. There the colors, brightness and shadows nearly show up equal as in Viewport. So mostly I get a satisfactory image at the first render. Plus the render took only 2 to 5 minutes on a simple scene. But I cannot use my beloved Poser anymore on Windows 10. So I wanted to give DAZ a try.

I will search for the spot render tool. Maybe it is a poor replacement for a better aligned Viewport. Why there is no simple brightness adjustment for the viewport?
