Hello, I think I have some problem with the rendering. I use Iray with GTX1060 - 6GB RAM, Intel I7, 18GB RAM. For an empty scene with only figure, ligts , some cloths and hair the render takes more than 12 hours and if I put the time limit for more I think it will go forever.
- I use defoult settings
- only on the figure the maps are 4K - every other map is 750/750p
- I use Iray materials

I would read everything you can find on lighting, surfaces, how shaders work, what kind of shader slow things down... There are so many variables. Look at how lighting affects real cameras. I'm still learning loads and still have bad renders from time to time. But over all my rendering has improved.
Also a huge slow down factor is the size of the image. You didn't mention how big the image was that you were trying to render.
If you have subd turned up high on everything, that can take a lot of Vram like a lot of large texture maps can. Also, once you have been kicked down to cpu render once, the only way to get gpu to start rendering again is to save scene, close DS down, then reopen it once the task has finished closing.
What does the render log say? The little window that counts render iterations?
If it says (CPU) at the end, you're not rendering with your GPU, your graphics card.
I use a ready product for lights, so i think they are optimised. The size of the image is 1800/1440p. When I go to the computer Ill loot at the log - but how can I switch to use the card instead of the CPU. Even if I restart the program or the computer the first render is still renders forever.
What driver version are you using (right-click on desktop>nVidia Conrol Panel) and what version of Ds (Help>About Daz Studio)? What are you device settings in the Advanced tab of Render Settings? Does your render include an enclosed space, such as a room?
Latest version of the GPU driver and latest version of DAZ ( don't know the wxact numbers, Im not on this computer). I use default settings and the space is open with one plane only for a white background. The figure is with subd 1
Had a thought, not sure if it will help. You said maps were 750px x 750px? Try resizine them to either 1024 x 1024 or 512 x 512. Not sure if it's outdated stuff that no longer applies anymore, but I was taught when I first started with 3d stuff that maps should be 512, 1024, 2048, 4096 etc. There is a specific name for those numbers, but I forget what it is.
First things first:
Go to the render settings tab, click on "Advanced" at the top, and check the hardware settings - is it set to use your graphics card?
Iray never stops rendering until you tell it to stop either manually, by limiting the number of iterations, the time, or the render quality converged ratio settings.
Which mode are you using? Photoreal takes a long time anyway, but interactive is faster but loses caustics, volumes(inc SSS) and emmitted surface illumination, also interactive mode outside the view panel uses batch processing, so sometimes it won't let you quit until it reaches its next batch iteration 1,3,7,15,31,63.....
Try rendering without the hair, sometimes it's a transperancy shadows thing.
I check both GPU and CPU on the adv options. I mention the time stop because even if all the graphic stops are at minimum the render goes forever if I set the time longer. On the log it says CPU is used but why - there is only one figure without clothes.
I even try without hair - the result in the log is CPU again.
Is the OptiX Prime Acceleration checked? It sometimes makes the GPU fail and fall back onto the CPU.
Interactive mode can take up to an hour just to cancel on a cpu at iterations above 255, it has to get to 511 iterations before it stops.
Just a guess here. When you say you have the most recent nvidia driver, is that using Windows to update, or updating directly from Nvidia? Windows will almost always be way behind the current releases when updating Nvidia drivers.
If you're dropping dropping to CPU the most likely cause is the scene is too big.
To verify create a scene with a single primitive with just a shader, a distant light bright enough to light the primitive and 1 camera. If that renders on GPU only then you have confirmation that the scenes you're building are too big for a 6gb card.
Hello, thanks to all for the answers - I uptaded the driver from Nvidia. Tried both OptiX Prime Acceleration checked and unchecked. And I tried to render just a small premitive with enough basic light - same - CPU render.
So it's a driver issue then. From reading the forums, if your running daz 4.12, it seems to have broken some drivers for older cards.
Also some of the Nvidia drivers seem to have broken Iray, depending on if it's a 'studio' or 'game ready' driver.
Menu -> help -> troubleshooting, you should be able to view log, which will show you what is going on.
Gpu Z is a good tool for seeing what memory and load is on your GPU
Instead of just saying latest plesae give the actual version numbers.
Yes, sorry about the lack of information abut the driver - I was't on that computer at the time, but checked it. I will write it when I go to the computer - but yes I've checked the latest drives and I was with the 'game ready' driver. I will try with the "studio" driver and will write back.

Nvidia Driver 430.86 works with pre RTX GPUs and is stable in 4.12.0.86 and 4.12.1.55 Beta
Happy end - my GPU driver was "studio"version, but I'm on win7 and the latest "studio"driver is way older than the "game ready" driver so I instal it. It seem later "studio" drivers is for win10 only.

Now the render deteckts the card and the CUDA core correctly and I render 20 times faster. Thanks to all for the help.
Upgrade to Win10. Win 7 is out of support. There will only minimal security patches going forward and with so many still using it it will be targeted by bad actors very heavily. The upgrade to Win10 is still free.
