Am I correct in my assumption that [MRL Curley Ponytail] this is Iray? It doesn't identify it as such on the store page.

Considering the other hairs by the same artist have only Iray presets I'd say it's a fair assumption

    Same ;)

Unfortunately we're not in the main target anymore...

  • The categories in the read me indicate Iray only, I'm afraid.

I mean this with no snark at all intended- but why do you prefer delight/something else? (I've only used Iray as I believe that was what I read was best for Nvidia cards...?). Hopefully more will come out with more options or is it possible even for you to get the hair and use shaders on them?

I fail to see why it can't be used in 3DL. There are many users that use outside render options like Luxrender, Unity, Octane and they all have to tweak materials every time, how is using 3DL any different?

I never liked the (Iray) material options that came with any of the Linday dforce hairs and had to create my own preset and save it for future use. If I was a 3DL user I would expect to have to do this in most cases with any new items.

There are a couple of packages of lray to 3DL converters, but hair tends not to take them well.  Even when there is a hair setting. Wolfie over on Rendo does a lot of texture addons which usually include 3DL materials, but s/he doesn't do those for everything. And, so far, the only hair shaders for 3DL seem to be Toon shaders,  which are a bit outside my intended target range. Now, if someone came out with a pack of realistic 3DL hair shaders in a good range of colors I'd grab them in a shot, and not need to worry further.

I prefer to work in 3DL because I'm not into photo-realism, I don't have an Nvidia card (iMacs use Radeon, mostly), and even if I up the rendering time Iray never comes out sharp enough to suit me. (I also loathe progressive rendering, and there is no way to turn that off.)

I understand Jodel and I am not faulting anyone for using whatever render engine they want, just trying to point out alternative ideas to get a product to work instead of relying on a one click option that may not exist at times or with certain products..

Because there are renders out there that are less resource hungry and are not tied to nvidia. And are arguably better than Iray.

3Delight can produce images the same as Iray can; the skills required are different. Sadly Studio's implementation of 3Delight is I understand limited.

Thanks for the info. Still new so once I have a better handle on Iray settings I definitely will check out others :) Though I did try Octane but only got gray shaded results that was beyond my current skill level to figure out how to fix coolblush

Because I like the style of images I get out of 3DL better. I've used Iray too, but it just doesn't "fit" me as well.

And yes, I can convert the materials myself. I started using DS when poser materials were the norm, so I'm used to it, and usually adjust materials anyway. But converting iray materials requires additional work (and can be a royal PITA sometimes), and as Jodel mentioned good 3DL hair shaders are sorely lacking. So having 3DL materials as a starting point is definitely preferred.

  • From my experience, if you are looking for cutsie or just more anime style, then 3DL is for you. Iray produces superior quality images. I go for as real as I can get it and 3DL just looks so 2002 realistic. I have a beast of a computer and an Nvidia 1080ti and even with that, the render times leave a lot to be desired with Iray, so I will give you that. I typically just do a timeline and move camera and poses for 3 to 6 frames and render while I am at work. I come home and see which frames need tweaking and then adjust and try again when I am asleep. I've gotten to where I can knock out 10 images a day like this.

  • But anyhow, for the real reason I came here. Is anyone able to get this hair to simulate with dForce? I've tried everything and it keeps giving me simulation error. Yes, I am up to date on the current build of DAZ and I can simulate other objects like clothing and hair. Though, I've notice a lot of the strand based hair makes DAZ up and crash when you hit simulate.

    From the product description:

"Please note that this hair includes a wide variety of morphs and parameters dials for maximum control and is not intended to be simulated."

Most hair color packs are just square jpgs of different hair colors/textures. You could just apply any 3DL hair texture/shader then manually switch out the jpg and opacity maps to any color in an iRay pack. If the jpgs are not full squares, it’s easy to clone the rest of the texture. You’d have to do each one manually in Photoshop but then you’d have textures you can use on any hair. Make as many hair colors as you want!

  • "MRL Rigged Curly Ponytail has a wide range of hair options and combines the realism of dforce with the control of rigging to create an ultra realistic and controllable Curly Ponytail that suits a wide variety of different genres."

Phoenix1966, the hair loads right out of the box with dForce modifiers applied to the ponytail, its nodes, the scalp hairs and its nodes but not the scalp itself. Something that shouldn't be the case with non dForce items and I know this because I frequently turn non dForce items into dForce items with a 75% success rate. The item also comes with a simulations settings folder in the product. Explore the product and simulation settings appears below Documents, Hair and Materials tabs. It was clearly intended to be a dForce designed hair but it just doesn't work under an circumstances. It also crashes the simulation for everything else in the scene unless it is hidden prior to simulation. One last thing, the scalp hairs sit quite a ways above the scalp itself, which looks horrible and without dForce being used, there has been no way to fix it from what I can tell as it does not seem to conform or morph with head morphs themselves. So this is all around a huge let down for me as I absolutely love the look and style of this hair.

  • Also, I don't buy hair anymore unless it has dForce. I own 11 MRL products so far and many of them are hairs. Every other MRL hair by the creator is dForce and says so in the item name. My guess, it was sold new as dForce and problems arose and dForce was taken out of the title when a solution couldn't be found. That is speculation of course but would make sense with my choice of purchases. Again, I'm not trying to pick a fight but I am sad that this hair is basically useless to me unless the vendor can offer tips or a solution.

  • I don't own the hair, but based on the (I agree, confusing) description, it sounds like it was created using dforce, then altered, and is no longer intended to have dforce simulations applied. The first line sounded like it may have been copied from another hair, but the last line is pretty clear about not intending it to be simulated.

However, you may get a better answer if you open a ticket through support for clarification.

  • AlmightyQUEST, I removed dForce Modifiers from the hair and it essentially makes the hair a few strands. I don't claim to be an expert on how it works but it is clear that even though you cannot simulate it you absolutely need the dForce settings to make the hair appear. I really don't understand the workings of how it needs dForce to exist but can't be simulated at all.
