I'd love to get back into the groove with making Daz art but I do wonder. How well does Daz work on a gaming laptop? My laptop is prietty hefty and can handel mostly any modern game at ultra. However the one time I did try daz again it seemed to make my fans go nuts! Is there any render setitng I'm missing or some way to make it not want to turn my MSI isnt a pile of molten slag?

I'm so rusty I kinda forget the subtle inns and outs of the program. O_O

Rendering uses the CPU or GPU a lot, so it can generate quite a bit of heat.

What are the system specs of your laptop? (CPU, RAM, Grapic card....) "Gaming laptop" doesn't give us much data...

For example if you render with Iray you'll need a recent nvidia graphic card with enough VRAM to handle your scene if you want to render with the GPU.

  • Ahh yes! I'm sorry i didnt do that in my initial post.

    My laptop is thus:

    MSI GE73VR

Intel Core i7-7700hq Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)

17.3-Inch Full HD (1920x1080), 120 Hz Refresh Rate and 3ms response time panel

    GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5

    DDR4 16GB RAM (8gbx2) and 256GB NVMe SSD Plus 1TB (SATA) 7200rpm

It's fairly beefy for games but I do worry about rendering on it. frown

It's a fairly thin laptop, so the fans will get noisy keeping it cool. The upside is that MSI does a good job of designing their laptops to keep things cool under load. I'd just watch things at first to make sure your not pushing it too hard (monitor the temps with something like GPU-Z). I've used laptops for years, and haven't fried one yet. My last laptop I used for over three years, and had it run several 48 hour plus renders, and it's still working fine. My new laptop (MSI GT75 Titan) I just ran a 10 hour+ render and it was no issue at all  (4K image with fog and several light sources - image/link below). But, I use the "full sized" laptops, so there is more room for cooling.

Best advice, other than letting the fans do their job, is to make sure with Iray that you are only using GPU, not CPU anf GPU. Using both will generate a lot more heat, and give you little or no speed improvement. The fans on my last laptop were much louder than on this one, but they are simply doing their thing to keep your computer cool. Your computer probably also has a "turbo cool" mode (or something similar) that turns the fans on max. This can be used to ensure everything runs as cool as possible, but will be loud.

  • Thank you very much! I will get that temprature program right away and I will keep an eye on how my laptop is handelling certan renders. I'll start smallw ith single items and characters to see what it can take.

Man I'm so excited to get back into rendering! smiley

I forgot to mention, you might also want to get a laptop cooling pad. They can help reduce temps a lot.

  • Ahh yes I have a beefy cooking pad already, it has 4 fans and everything. Thnk you tho for the reminder. ^_^

I do hope you meant 'cooling' and not 'cooking'!!
