Install DS in external drive

I have been using DS for some years now, never with much tech skill but some enthusiasm, after all its fun and thats what counts. My old machine suffered terminal decline a few weeks back and after not anywhere near enough consideration I splurged out and purchased a new Apple, the specs follow.

 Model Name:    iMac

  Model Identifier:    iMac19,2

Processor Name:    Quad-Core Intel Core i3

  Processor Speed:    3.6 GHz

  Number of Processors:    1

  Total Number of Cores:    4

L2 Cache (per Core):    256 KB

  L3 Cache:    6 MB

  Memory:    8 GB

  Boot ROM Version:    1037.80.34.0.0

  SMC Version (system):    2.47f3

  Serial Number (system):    C02Z41WHJWDW

  Hardware UUID:    F9354991-6CC6-5803-82CB-69AAAEB56852

So I have a machine which is probably not the best for running Daz on, but its what I have so I have to get on with it. I also have a 2012 Macbook Pro 15inch with 256GB SSD hard drive. My question is this, first is it possible to install DS to an external hard drive either ssd or USB3 or maybe Thunderbolt, not concerned which because both machines have connections for everything. Of course this means actually running DS on one of these machines, so can it be done and which would be the best set up to go for?

Doubtless there will follow a series of mind numbingly stupid questions, displaying how little knowledge I have, but it may bring a few smiles and and whats wrong with that?

Look forward to some advice when anyone has time

Many thanks David

Yes, you can install DS on an external drive, but I'm not sure it's possible to have it "portable", ie fully installed on the drive and you just have to plug it to use it on any machine. Under Windows for example there are settings in the registry, which wouldn't be "transfered" with the drive.

So if you plan to use both machines I would rather suggest that you install DS itself directy on both machines and use the external drive only to install and share the content (which is what takes drive space anyway). That's the setup I've used for years (with Windows machines, but it should work just as well with Macs).
