Advice on usage with other apps
Hi,
I left the 3D work about 10 years ago when I got a totally new profession. Have not been motivated on doing it for hobby either. I used to work with Carrara, Poser, Hexagon and UV mapper pro. I would think the tech has come ahead of me since that time and I'm obsolete in knowledge and apps. I would like som advices.
I've downloaded Daz studio and Sketchup, and barely opened the apps. It seems that Sketchup would have saved me a lot of time back then if I knew and it was available. I see there is options to model in Sketchup and export obj for DS.
But I wonder about the mapping. Is there any other program like UV mapper, or can you apply these functions easy inside of DS?
Is UV mapper obsolete?
Is DS more simple to use than Carrara, and can you do the same things?
Comments
Figures have changed quite a bit, both DAZ Studio and Poser use a new weight mapped rigging system, but unfortunately, they are not the same any more. The new DAZ 3D figures will still work in Poser 9 and up, using the DSON importer, but the new Poser figures don't work inside DAZ Studio.
I still use UV Mapper, and you cannot UV map inside DS. There are other newer UV mapping programs around these days, and if you google it, you will find them, I can't remember the names off-hand.
DS and Carrara can both load DS Scenes and figures etc, and they can both render and do animations, but Carrara is a fuller package (IMO) and you can model and UV map in Carrara as well.
Just Googled UV map software for you, and the ones that I hear most often are Ultimate Unwrap, Headus, Roadkill (free I think) and good old UV Mapper.
Thanks!
I'll just stick with UV mapper, I guess, since its still in use.
Poser is out for me then. I was actually hoping that DS would be a total suite, instead of jumping forth and back Carrara-Poser, not have to jump forth and back DS-Carrara either.
My last Carrara was v5. Thats my preferances. Would DS be like Carrra 5, or is v5 still overall better. Since I do not know DS yet, I don't know how to compare.
They can't really be compared, like apples and oranges :)
DAZ Studio does not do UV Mapping or Modelling, unlike Carrara, and DS does not have Collision Detection (as such) or Physics and Carrara does (at least now in Carrara 8.5)
Carrara can also build large Scenes, similar to what Vue can do, it has Replicators and an Ocean Primitive, Terrain editor, and an excellent Shader editor as well.
Carrara can also be enhanced with plugins for various things as well. There is good information on Carrara here : http://carraracafe.com/
DAZ Studio is more like Poser in the things that it can do, but the latest version is a long way ahead of what it used to be, especially using the new Generation 5 (Genesis) figures and Generation 6 (Genesis 2, Male and Female).
Have a look in the Carrara forum here too, there are many interesting posts. I have only bought Carrara 8.5 in the last week or so, so I am still a beginner in that area.
Keep using UV mapper Pro. As long as these softwares all use OBJ's to import and export the mesh that will always be useful. I know I used to work with Poser 4 and back then I didn't have it I only ended up buying it in the last year and it saves me a lot of time, besides your licence should still be good for it. I see users on here using Daz Studio with a lot of different other programs. I myself use Poser, Daz, Vue, Carrara, uvmapper and others including Blender which is worth looking into. I think blender is free licence s I downloaded it and ran it to do some converting...lol. But I know it has many more uses then that. Carrara is a lot better and at the same time still the same program you used with the exception that you can now animate Poser and Daz figures in it (my only drawback with it is my computer and graphics card is too slow for it). I might add that I am a hobbiest so I don't have much to show for all this talk, I just enjoy learning what each has to offer. I can say I have become comfortable with Daz Studio and I used to be a Poser only person. most of my work starts in Studio. Studio at this moment has some draw backs at this point (I can't make my own dynamic clothes like I can in Poser) Well that's my 2 cents
Looked at some youtube about Carrara 8.5. Looks like it has come further by the years, and that I can go for it again. Need to have new PC, though. Will move over to the Carrara forum.
Thanks people!
