huh? Strand based hair vs dForce hair?

I was looking at my DIM content today.  I found an item that was a limited time freebie (no longer available I am afraid) that was basically a nutcracker with strand based hair.  (I think 2019 Christmas freebie.)  What makes the strand based hair different from dForce hair?

    Hair made using the dForce hair engine is strand-based/fibermesh, but not all strand-based/fibermesh hair is dForce. Strand-based just means that the hair is made up individual hairs, however they're made, rather than larger meshes that represent groups of hairs.

    Indeed, the earlier dforce hairs are made of geometry (faces and texture planes) and the strand based ones are like Gordig mentions.
