Well, I think most of us {certainly I did} invest in external harddrives for storage. They come in pretty big sizes these days.
Will they show up in DAZ if i move them?
Yes, as long as you select the new location(s) as content directories.
1) Hmmm ... question ... are you storing the original zip files in your downloads folder or do you have DIM set to delete them? [ C: - users - public - publicdocuments - daz3d - installmanager - downloads ... for standard installation location ] If they are still there, then you may have many gigabytes of space to free up on the C: drive ... if so, I recommend saving them to another drive so you do not have to download them again if something happens to your system. If they are deleted, then you need more memory - either internal or external. Many Daz Studio users do end up with this situation. I would recommend placing the less used items on an external hard drive because it does slow things down a little compared to internal memory.
2) You will need to go into preferences and CMS (content managmenet system) to set the link to the new location for information. Once done, all of the items should show in your workspace.
Not to be picayune, 3141592654, but memory and storage should not be confused. A typical PC contains many types of memory, but disks are not memory, they are storage (notwithstanding Windows use of the term "virtual memory", which, as the name implies, is not really memory at all). Aside from cache memory, the term memory should only be used in reference to system RAM. Otherwise, it tends to lead to confusion. Other than that, your advice seems sound.
I had started using an external hd to supplement storage space for my Das Studio stuff. However, when I got my new laptop earlier this year, I decided to only put the programs themselves (Daz Studio and DIM) on the computer HD and installed everything else (all content) to the new external HD. I pointed Daz Studio to the location of my content and directed DIM to install everything to the new HD as well. As a result, Daz Studio takes up almost no HD space. I did this with all my programs. I have an SSD TB and currently, with my 106 programs, and some documents I choose to store on the computer HD, I still have over 800 GB left on that HD. My last computer had a 512 SSD and I was always trying to figure what to offload as i would get down to 50-60 GB left.
