New PC is here - question regarding older version of Studio..

So the beast has landed (ended up with the Threadripper 3960x, 256GB RAM and dual Titan RTXs with a custom water cooling solution from EKWB which cools both the cpu and the gpus) and I am already banging my head against the wall with 4.12...

When doing some cleaning on the old PC I found this file: DAZStudio_4.11.0.383_Win64.exe which is the installation file for the last working-as-I-want-it-to general release of Studio and I was wondering if I need additional files to get a working copy running? (I don't want to try it and find even more problems due to missing software...)

Anyone?

If you use GoZ or LAMH or any kind of plugin like that, it might not work with newer version of the plugin. If you have rtx titans though, you would probably get way better performance out of the newest beta, you can install that beside that version of DS to try it out without conflicts.

  • For the most part you should be fine.

As TheKD points out the bridges may have issues, but content may also have issues.

If there's been an update to the starter essential, or something in the render engine has changed, options being enabled in previous but not in current or vice versa, you'll run into some issues.

My current favorite is that at some point G8F apparently had the toe spread reversed, and so when i load a particular shoe, the setting spreads the toes as opposed to squishing them. annoying.

I am actually having all kinds of issues with the latest beta (iray preview in the viewport acting up, texture problems, scenes dropping to CPU with less than 8GB used reported by GPU-Z and quite a few instances of Studio crashing randomly to name a few) which is why I long to go back to 4.11.

I have no way of knowing if these problems are caused by my current configuration as opposed to the old PC, but trying out 4.11 would at least put my mind at ease and try to find workarounds for the 4.12 stuff..

Should have planned ahead and kept all installation files... it's like the importance of making backups in general, you don't learn until it's too late...

Luckily I don't rely on Das Studio to make money, but with this setup it would be nice to have a somewhat stable version to play with.

The thing that really bugs me about 4.12 is ther undo featture, either under the edit list or CTRL-Z.  It won't undo what you just did, it undoes whatever was before that.  Really annoying.  For me, the best and most stable version was 4.10, but of course with RTX cards you'll want to run 4.11 or higher. I was using 4.10 for set up until a few days ago when it go corrupted or something. I tried to reinstall it but ran into issues with CMS.

If it was me, I would uninstall 4.12 and install 4.11 is you have a copy and it worked for you.

What are your temps doing when it crashes to CPU?  Are the water blocks working ok?

I've not run into, or seen reports of, the undo issue. Is this with all actions or only certain actions?

  • there are things it won't undo and not being able to have several hundred undos is a pain too
    ---
at one point in the past year I went back to 4.8 to try to figure out where some issues started.
    ----
    In fact I think I ran 8 9 10 and 11 during that run.

For example:  I move the figure, turn it's head, apply an expression.  I don't like the expression and hit CTRL-Z.  The expression stays the same, and the thing that is undone is turning the head.  Honestly I haven't kept track of what exactly it does it with, but G3 F expressions seem to be an issue in my case.  It did it with 4.11 too.  It was one of the main reasons I wanted to stick with 4.10.

If you do find a repeatable way to trigger this please report it.

I am still running 4.10 daz studio with win 7 pro because win 10 uses up too many resources. Nice rig Ham it is a monster. I have 64gb of ram and a xeon10 cores with 20 threads and that is enough for me. I have 2 titan x and they are also enough. I tend to only do 2d stills and the sad truth is I tend to use opengl more than anything else. Iray is fun to look at but it takes too much time even with post denoising with the Intel free denoiser. Most of the stuff I do is comic related so I run it thru a toon/sketch shader in Photoshop cs6 and it looks great. I have been playing with the new blender and iclone7 as well as unreal game engine renderer with my vr google and it is fun. Animation is too much work for it to be a hobbie! It needs multiple people helping you or you will be overwhelmed with all but simple animations. Once again congradulations on you new render monster. Have fun
