Working with mini characters: how can I fix the eyes?

I am currently doing a comic where the characters get shrunken. They are around a scale of 10%. One of the issues with doing this is for some reason the sclera appear black. Seems to sort of relate to the lighting, but I'm not sure how. I have tried many different textures, and it does it with Gen 2, 3 and 8 characters. Is there a fix for this beyond coloring in the sclera using Photoshop?

This has to do with a floating point precision issue, where the sclera moves out of position (afaik) because of the rounding of floating points.
