How to use HDRI

I've seen some things about HDRI images but I can't seem to find how to use them. I found a site where I can download several but no instructions on where to place the files after unzipping. Nor do I see any help in DAZ. Is there anyone out there who can help?

You load them into the Environment map in Render Settings' Editor tab - and you need the environment mode set to Dome or Dome and Scene.

  • Thanks for responding, Richard. I checked that location and have more questions. First, what is HDRI? What size of HDRI does DAZ accept? When I click on the image in the Enviroment Map and then browse it opened up into the ...shaders/iray/resource folder. Is that where I'm supposed to find them? Also, when I download HDRI from other sites, like HDRI Haven, where do I put the files?

HDRI - High Dynamic Range Image (so HDR image or HDRI, rather than HDRI image). It's an image with a lot more levels between black and white than a standard image, and in general it's distorted in some way to wrap around a sphere - the idea being that Iray (or many other engines) can take the colour from any point on the spehere and use that as the light colour/intensity from that direction when rendering rather than have real lights and objects for them to bounce off; it's much more resource-friendly, though less flexible.

You can use any size, though lower resolutions will not be at all suitable for showing in place (Draw Dome on) and will give softer lighting. The images can be anywhere you can access them, just use the file dialogue to go to the right place.

I recommend that you watch this very informative video:

DAZ Studio 117 - Global Illumination, Environment Lighting, IBL and HDRI explained

He has many informative video tutorials that will help immensely getting up to speed in Daz. That one goes directly to your questions.

  • Mavante, thanks for the video link. Richard, thanks for the info. I guess I was over thinking it a bit. Too often in the past I downloaded/installed something and have no idea where to find them, even in DAZ. And don't get me started on trying to find instructions/readme/documentation files for products. I have several I'm still looking for. BTW, excuse my ignorance but what is the 'file dialogue'?

  • Mavante, I just found the guy's DAZ Studio 101 video collection. It looks like I can learn a lot there. Thanks again for the lead.
