Removing Mesh Editor Surfaces?

Is there a way to remove a surface from a mesh?

Here's what I mean:

I create a circle in the mesh editor and assign it a material.

I then decide to divide it up into quarters, and I assign each of them a different material.

Now the cloth item still has the whole circle listed under surfaces, but it points to and effects nothing, can I remove that group somehow?

On the Tools Panel, select the empty field and right-click on it IN the Tools Panel, the option to remove the surface will appear.

[geometry editor tool being selected for use of course]
