A noobs question re IRAY decals

I'm new to IRAY decals and haven't quite figured them out.

I'm trying to give this guy a chest tattoo. I made a decal node parented to his chest and pointed it at his chest. I haven't placed the opacity map yet, so I expect a big black square to show up on his chest. Instead I get this Rorschach-esque pattern; it's like the decal doesn't reach everywhere. Why is that and what do I do about it?

    Is the decal node cutting into the chest mesh?

    Yes. If I move it further away I get nothing at all.

    Oh, I think I've figured it out. I've just been pointing the node in the wrong direction.

    Decals definitely aren't the most intuitive thing in the world.

    I think there should be a visual hint about where the decal is pointing at. Same with section panes.
