OBJ seperation

Hi,

I downloaded a freebie -a bunch of spaceships- in obj format. When I want to use one in DS they all download as one object, not seperate ones. I'm sure I saw a post here how to seperate them, or remove the ones I don't need from the scene, but I've searched for that post and can't find.it.

Any advice please?

  • If you have any skills with a 3D modeller, the simplest option is to export each spaceship as a separate OBJ file from your modelling application.

To do it solely in Daz Studio:

    • In Geometry Editor, select one face on one space ship.
    • Hit Ctrl and * together to select the rest of the faces in that one space ship, then Ctrl and / together to invert the selection.
    • Right click in viewport, select Geometry Selection->Hide Selected Polygons (@Daz - wot no shortcut?).  Everything except your one spaceship should now be hidden.
    • Export to OBJ ensuring you check the 'Ignore Invisible Nodes' option in the export dialog box.
    • Open the Figure Setup tool*, right click in the Geometry List and select 'Add Geometry'.  Select the OBJ you just exported, and import it.
    • Select the item that appears in the Geometry List and drag it over to the right and drop it on the Geometry node in the Relationships list.  One or more bones will be created, depending on how the object geometry is setup.  We don't need these bones but they do no harm.
    • Click the Create button in the Figure Setup tab and navigate to the viewport where your spaceship should appear, and also in the Scene pane.
    • The bone(s) created can be deleted using the Joint Editor if you don't want them.  The origin of the single spaceship may well be some distance from its geometry: it will be where the origin of the original spaceship 'fleet' object was.  You can adjust it (a small green dot) using the Joint Editor.

*As an alternative to the Figure Setup, you can simply import the OBJ file you create as an OBJ file, but this will give you an oversized bounding box.  You may or may not care about that, but the Figure Setup approach avoids this.

Thanks for the info, however when I click on Geometry Editor in the tools nothing seems to happen.

I assume you mean import as one rather than download?

You need the Geometry Editor tool active, and the compound model selected. You also need to check that the whle thing has selected after doing ctrl * - I would be more inclined to use marquee seelct to just drag a box around one model (right-click in Viewport>Selection Mode>Marquee) since one might hope that there will be soem option to have moving parts move. Once you have a model selected, you can right-click in the Viewport>Geometry Selection>Invert Selection, thenm right-click>Geometry Editing>Delete Selected Polygons, which should leave you with one ship - either save that as an asset (File>Save As>Support Assets>Figure Prop Asset) or export as a new OBJ, reimport the original OBJ and repeat for the next ship.

I've managed to get the Geometry Editor tool settings box and pick a selection mode,(marquee), but in the viewport I try to drag a box around a model but no box appears.

EDIT: It's appearing now, probably just my computer being slow.

I got to the Geometry Editing part, but the delete selected polygon option isn't there. I shows Merge, Flip, Delete hidden polygons and delete unused vertices.

EDIT: I hid selected polygons (the ones I don't want), then delete hidden polygons

Don't know how I did it last time, but now when I select Marquee, my curser just stays as a white arrow in the viewport and doesn't let me drag a box around anything.

    What am I doing wrong?

Which version of DS is this (Help>About Daz Studio)? I suspect it's an older one if you don't have the Delete Selected option (either than or you need to use Window>Workspace>Update and Merge Menus).

    I'm using 4.8 pro.

That's too old for the delete selected command then (and a lot of other stuff).

I keep meaning to upgrade, just a matter of time.
