Fireflies in my hair

DDCreateDDCreate Posts: 1,398

I have tried changing the hair color and that doesn't have an effect. So I zero'ed every dial in the surfaces tab that had the word "reflectivity" in it. Does anyone know what's wrong with this hair? I like the style but I never get to use it because it renders so poorly.

Thanks for any help!

  • What is the name of this hair?

Thank you. I don't own that hair so can't check the textures. Sometimes on a few hairs there are some patches on the texture images that need touchup.

For some reason the image you had attached to your post is not here now showing either so others checking this thread, it's not fireflies but larger specks of white that are appearing in the render.

Possibly if you load another hair and be sure that the lights, render settings, etc. all make for a better render. Then swap in Amelia hair ... if the white shows, remove all the textures, apply a dark colour, and see if the white areas are still showing. If yes then it's not the textures for sure, has to be one of the applied settings.

Hopefully somebody else has some more ideas.

Couple of quick questions for you. What lights are you using and which render engine? Also are you using Sprite's material settings or custom settings?

That is a very usual problem with a lot of hairs in DAZ - No matter what light you use the big fat white blobs appear
and only Photoshop can fix it!

  • Thankfully I don't share that experience. My only beef with hairs rendered in Iray are those skull caps some use to cover the foreheads which render out as black marks. Skull caps should cover the skull, not the forehead.

If you are getting the skullcap issue you can bump the overall general scale of the hair up to 100.1 % and that usually takes care of it. This is something you get when HD Morphs are applied that have no projection morph with them.

Okay thank you, I'll try that :-)

I'm guessing part of the problem in your example image is the lighting set up. The shaders on this hair do tend to have more firefly's initially, but will usually clear up. My guess is that your lighting is a bit too harsh/bright causing more intense light reflections causing what you are seeing. The image below is are examples ofthe hair rendered using the default HDRI. The first shows the default shaders, the second shows the hair with the metallic flakes reduces to 0.10 and the top coat reduced to 0.20.It looks like reducing the "Metallic Flakes Weight" and "Top Coat Weight" helps reduce the number of initial firefly's, so that might help with what your experiencing. Another possible option is if you have the UHT2: Ultimate Color hair shaders they should provide something that will render without the issues your experiencing, though your lighting set up may still need to be modified to minimize the issues your experiencing.

    Hope this helps!!

  • Working with a hair file today in a lit scene and got lots of white globs as well as the usual little fireflies. So apparently yes large white globs can be fireflies too.

Anyhow the solution was to Zero Top Coat Glossiness.
