Error message

Can't apply a mat for a hairpiece, I've had no problems with this specific hair before right now.  The error message reads:

Invalid hierarchy for selected node(s) and "preset_hierarchical_material" type; no root(s) found.

Do I need to reinstall the item or reload the scene or something complicated?

That preset is a hierarchical preset, meant to be applied to all items parented to a figure. That message means you have the wrong item selected when you apply the material, you're supposed to select the main figure.
