Highlands and Carousel- stunning!

It's not often that the promos of new items catch my eyes at first sight. These two do-  Both are a must-have item to me. Thank you, Aako and Ansiko!

I think so too, I'm just not sure whether the Highlands set will overwhelm my poor little iMac system. In case you get the set could you maybe post how much RAM it is eating up? Would be much appreciated!

I agree! Aako does quality work with landscapes and I look forward to using the highlands

both are definitely gorgeous, the carousel definitely caught my eye and I never even thought it a ride for couples before, at least in my family it's always been for the kiddos, so definitely makes me rethink that

It is a beautiful carousel but I assume that it is not meant to represent an American carousel? Thanks to my father, I know that American carousels rotate counter clockwise. He was a bit of a nut for carousels and he used to hand carve small scale carousel animals (3 to 8 inches). One time he carved a complete set and mounted it on a record player and fashioned a canopy out of an older umbrella. Whenever he showed that carousel to anyone he would always point out that it rotated the wrong way. When his first grandson was born, he carved a 1/3 size carousel horse and put it on a rocker base for him.

This carousel is one in St. Paul, MN, that my father used to take us to:

I have the same question—and also have a poor little iMac system. Has anybody worked with Highlands yet? Any reports on system demands?

Highlands so crashed my system I couldn't begin to calculate system demands ... It was the instancing.  It was fine when I turned off all the grasses. I did not have the patience to render them separately but that might be one way to get around it.  But I do have an older video card and stopped with version 4.10.  I don't have a problem with most scenes but this one ...

Did you remember to set the Iray optimization to "Memory" not Speed. This is pretty important when rendering scenes with a lot of instances.

    They do look amazing.

I just noticed I have two products from this PA; I item I think I did a test render when buying it, the other I didn't.

I'll certainly be getting the highland scene; no use atm though.

I had bought Highlands and loaded the set for a render. It didn't work for what I wanted, but I didn't notice a problem. But, from the conversation here, I went to look up the pdf I printed to get the PA's name, Aako, and looked at their store. I found I had some of their product and had wishlisted others. So, today became an Aako buy day. My thanks for the thread, I would have missed out on some great items.

So I have a 1080ti and 64GB RAM on a Win 10 and I set Instancing Optimization to 'Memory' and used 'mitchell'. I loaded up Highlands, added a character, outfit, hair, backpack and the German Shepherd. It took a smidge of 23 minutes to render. I think the German Sheperd may have slowed it down. I hope this gives folks an idea of how much resources might be needed. I resized my image down from 2400 x 1483 to 1600 x 988 so I could post it.

Maybe it's from the UK. A quote from Wikipedia:

Viewed from above, in the United Kingdom, merry-go-rounds, called ‘gallopers’ by the showmen community when populated by model horses, usually turn clockwise (from the outside, animals face to the left), while in North America and Mainland Europe, carousels typically go counterclockwise (animals face to the right).[6]

When you think about it logically,  when the carousel horses are facing to the left one can mount the horse in the correct manner, as if one were mounting a real horse to go riding.   It is assumed that mounting from the left side of a horse reflects back to wehn  men wore swords rather than carried guns  and as the sword is carried on the left, mounting from the left meant the rider din't get tangled up in his sword or sabre trying to get on his horse.

I’ve been all over the US, and I’ve never seen a car with the steering wheel on the right side.

Context is a pretty funny thing.

Although it is rare, I have. Some postal workers have them t0 facilitate mailbox delivery.

I almost brought my British spec Mazda 626 back to the USA after my assignment in England. Loved that car. But, knowing how klutzy I am on left/right on a good day, thought better of it. And even today, thirty years later, if I am tired, or there are no road markings, I sometimes will move my car over to the proper side of the road for England.

  • It may be noted that both UK vehicles and trains also go in the 'clockwise' direction of a Merry-go-round when seen from kerb or platform. There are not many things the UK is consistent in, but this does seem to be one.

    carousels arent bi ?

south of the quator things should swirl the other way?

  • I just bought "Plains and Mountains" also from Aako. Lovely renders but it instacrashes with Filement on DS beta and it is incredibly slow to preview as it stutters badly when moving the camera. Has one of you solved this? Thanks.

I have Highlands and plan to get "plains and mountains" from Aako as soon as it gets on sale. Of course I wanted Highlands for my centaur renders because it looks like it could create a credible wide open landscape.

I have only used it with Iray in DS 4.15. It is true that the viewport is a bit sluggish in "Texture Shaded" mode, but it gets a lot better when you hide "grass" and "grass clump" under "center terrain" in your scene. Pose your character, set up your scene and unhide these two elements before rendering. The attached image took less than two minutes to render in 1920x1080. Iray convergence 95%.
